Beyond clearing cap space by cutting players, a source said the Dolphins likely will not retain safety Lance Schulters, who will be an unrestricted free agent Monday. That means the Dolphins, who cut three other players from the secondary Wednesday, will be required to reconstruct the unit almost entirely before the start of the 2006 season.

Thats a quote in the palm beach post. If no agreement is reached, and we some how scrape enough money for brees....there will be hardly no money for anything else. Our whole draft will be secondary help. Or extremely cheap free agents.

Media keeps saying that the Lions and Miami are the 2 front runners for the Brees Sweepstakes....this article says that the Lions just signed Shawn King as a QB yesturday. Thats gotta help us for the Brees thing.

I feel even if we sign Brees....the holes on our defense will be huge, and we still need a OLB with Seau gone, plus some depth would be nice. This year, the year we make a move back to the playoffs, could end up pretty bad that even Saban cant save it. The following year with not cap, (maybe) I think Wayne has deep pockets for the Dolphins and we should be ok.
Or if they do reach an agreement, (best case by doing this) before sunday night we will be ok.

If our D-line creates pressure, like we all know they can, then how good of coverage do we really need?

did u not see waht happened last year? and tha twas last year you cant say its osmething consistent. we need more DT and DB ASAP!

I would think Saban and Mueller have a plan for the secondary. They wouldn't just let everyone go and fill it in with scrubs. C'mon, we aren't under Wannstedt anymore. No more monkey business with our team

We set a team record for sacks last year....and probably missed another 20...so call those pressures...and our secondary was still tore up from the floor up. I think a good D-line can cover up a ordinary secondary, but only a little.

I think they do to, but it just so happens that all the FAT contracts we had from Wanny, were in the secondary and thats just what had to get cut in order to do business to get under the cap. Call it bad luck, but our secondary needs serious attention now.

Sam Madison - They say he didn't fit the scheme, getting up there in age. I don't think he did too much the last few years, but then you never really saw anything he did poorly

Reggie Howard - No explanation needed

Tebucky Jones - Got hurt, and cost a little too much for anyone

Lance Schulters - This is my question mark. He made a lot of good plays last year, but also got beat a few times (happens to everyone). He isn't too old from my understanding, but maybe his cap number is too high

So, from this list, the real shockers would be Madison and Lance. I think we keep Lance, and Sam finds work elsewhere.

Keep in mind we have young talent in Will Poole, Travis Daniels, and Yeremiah Bell

Other than Sam Madison, who's play was sporadic last year, no one who was cut will be missed from this years team. Tebucky Jones only played six games. Howard, whether he played the outside or slot corner, was toasted all year. Lance Shulters who was supposed to solidify the secondary was burned for some easy scores late in the season. At some point, our secondary has to bring in and play younger players like Daniels and Poole.

Guys, come on. Saban is a DEFENSIVE coach. He's not gonna overlook the secondary

Im sure he knows a ton of talent coming through the draft. besides, he spent an extra day at the combine watching the dbs.

The defense is one thing you do NOT have to worry about when Saban is coaching.

The good thing is that we can get by with a average to weak secondary because we play in the AFC East. Why is that important? We have the only Pro Bowl WR in the AFC East, which allows us to have a weaker secondary.

we will have 1 starter back from last season in our DBs, that is scary but Will Poole is back from IR and so is Mitchell

Also, we still don't know much about Mitchell and how well he'll be able to contribute this year.

It doesn't worry me, I know with the draft we'll put some youth and SPEED into that secondary. We already have Daniels (played damn well for a rookie, better than Surtain's rookie season), Poole (played very well his rookie year), Mitchell (young speedster), Tillman (SOLID), Bell (playmaker) and we're going to infuse all the talent we have now with the draft and maybe a FA or two. It doesn't bother me in the least, Saban (like someone said before) is a defensive coach AND his speciality is the secondary.

We'll be fine guys, maybe shaky next season, but it will pan out well.
