I truly doubt we will go after a big name CB or draft a CB in either of the first 2 rounds, and thats because of the following reasons:

Hill and Allen, Hill has a decent contract, has played well, is a Saban guy, who he coached at Mich State, there for, I doubt we either cut or bench him, that leaves us with a first round FS riding the bench yet even longer, he isnt taking over Bell either so we are left with 1 extremely capable starter riding the bench if kept at safety.

Out of our Safetys only Hill and Allen have any chances at playing CB as Bell is a natural safety.

Hill played CB in Mich State, in Zona and with the Raiders, he was the nickel CB in a Nickel defense wich was being used as a base formation, though since that was their base formation, he lined up closer to the LOS to assist in run support, therefor being referrenced to as a LB, but his responsibilities where still those of a CB. Therefor this is the first year he has EVER played S, allowing to suppose he would be more than capable to manage the CB spot.

On the other hand it leads you to wonder why that move hasnt taken place as of yet. It also makes you wonder why he wasnt given the starting spot at CB at Zona, and why he wasnt playing the outside instead of the Nickel with the Raiders. In all lights it seems as he is having his best season as Pro, playing at FS, leading to believe he is better off staying there.

Also it concerns that what might be holding the move from happening might be that there is no one capable to man his previous spot, which would be a reason to worry.

Though in the limited PT Allen has had hes been quite decent, having several pass break ups, 1 int, a decent amount of tackles, and the well known Watson blow. Now it might mean that the guy we are planning to play at CB is in fact Allen, who played CB his senior year at TN, and who has more than his fair share of athleticism.

While Jason isnt as fast as Goodman and Will are, his hips are more fluid, changes directions much better, has better footwork and back pedal, making you believe he would actually stick to rcvrs yet even better than the previous 2 mentioned, not to mention he does posses insane ball skills and far better instincts, body control, field awareness, would fare MUCH better against the larger rcvrs and against the deep ball.

When I think of Jason Allen at CB I cant help but think of Chris McAllister, think of it, if we play larger rcvrs, a tandem of a more expirienced Allen, with a full training camp, training camp invested at the CB position, a Travis Daniels with also more expirience, healthy and with Will Allen playing Nickel and as a starter against smaller faster rcvrs when playing teams like say Washington, Goofman exclusively as a dime, and maybe a late rounder at #5.

Now I think of it that sounds just fine to me, I mean, we still are the #3 pass defense, we just need that little special something to make it work, and having a starter at full strength (Daniels) and a 1st round pick waiting on the wings, should be enough to make our passing defense the most reliable part of this team.

i think we have to try to sign a big time corner. Maybe someone like nate clements

"i think we have to try to sign a big time corner. Maybe someone like nate clements"

Bingo!!!

Jason Allen I think projects better to safety. He won't beat out established CB's like Will Allen or Goodman. Neither of these guys are real cover guys, the kind Sam Madison or Pat Surtain were. Daniels comes close but not enough. We need a cover corner to take advantage of our great pass rush. We can develop a rookie but with the DL aging, I'd rather get a top flite guy like Clements or Samuel.

i hope we get atleast one big name added to the secondary this offseason as we deffinantly need it. but in saying that our offence does need much, much more work than any part of our defence.

we won't be able to compete for their services with other teams with more salary cap room.

I mostly agree with the main post. That is a workable solution. However, I think Allen could be a beast at safety. If we got a top FA corner our defense would be awesome next year. Then we could concentrate on O-Line (which is improving) and offense during the draft and with second teir FA talent.

If we had a shot at a can't-miss shut down corner, it might be worth it. However, I agree that we have a lot number of pretty good players.

We just have too many problems scoring on offense. We really need help there.

I agree with taking someone like nate clements or samuel in the free agency period to have a solid lock down corner also to boost are defense so we can draft O...however with the spot we are in now i dont see any linemen that deserve to be picked there, b/c Baker from USC isnt coming out soo i think we would still go D.. anyone have anythoughts on what we would doo..possibly trade down? i dunno

Our corners are decent at coverage but they have awful ball skills. We have 8 picks (two by Taylor/1 by Zach) as a team which is unacceptable given how good our front 7 are. 5 interceptions by our secondary is just embarrassing. To add perspective from other top D's, Chicago and Baltimore have 23 and 24 interceptions! Can you imagine what an additional 17 turnovers produced would have done for the season? You'd think we get no pressure on the QB which is obviously not the case. It is a MUST that we get a guy in FA or through the draft that can make plays on the ball!
