I know all the major talk for this week and few weeks to come is going to be about Pat White and rightly so.
But This off season our secondary sure got younger and more athletic really fast. We lost Goodman and Hill And we picked up Wilson Green Davis and Smith. Now Im not so hyped over Green but Wilson will be fun to watch playing safety with Bell back there. Smith might not play SO much right away and for all I know Davis might not either but my guess is Davis gets to go out there and play this kid loves to hit and loves to play man. He is only 20 years old and has time to learn. As far as Smith goes he is 6'4 and thats pretty much all you have to say about that. Its gonna be fun to watch some young guys flying around back there this year. I think if Smith shows improvment throughout the year than Will Allen will not be resigned but if he looks more and more like a project than he might be retained.

i agree with everything you just said, but i think smith will eventually be our free saftey no matter how much he think he is ready to play corner back.....

I considered this to be our #1 need going into the offseason, so needless to say I am ecstatic. We replaced Goodman and Hill with Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, Eric Green and Gibril Wilson (not to mention Chris Clemons, who I see making the team as a core ST guy and dime package DB). The group is younger and more athletic, but perhaps more importantly, they're more physical.

Bottom line is we went into this offseason with a very marginal def secondary. Our starting CBs were old, and one was a FA. Our best S was unsigned for 09. The other S was average, and I'm being generous. Our depth was non existant. Our most talented player, for whatever reason, had trouble learning and reacting to our defense.

I look at it now, some 4 months after the season ended, and we have an outstanding S combo talent wise, and we got younger in the process. We now have two of the most talented kids from the draft in the mix, and we still have Jason Allen who MIGHT just get it (who knows). And if he does, our secondary will have gone from one of the leagues worst to one of the leagues best.

If Jason Allen can FINALLY play CB, then we start Vontae (I just can't bring myself to call him VD) in the nickel. We could then rotate Sean Smith to FS, where I think he is projected anyway. Then next year we could have JA and Vontae at CB, Bell and Wilson at S, and the way we play in the secondary, there is no reason the FS can't be a nickelback (Smith).

I see bright things ahead for us.

As much as I think Smith will also inevitably be a FS....the kid can play some coverage...he looks athletic and loose enough to do it. If he can manage to play cb at a high level, it will totally neutralize Moss's height...as much as you can neutralize Moss anyway.

im glad people are coming around to the idea of Smith playing safety. I was saying it all day on saturday. The flaws to Smiths game (poor turn-and-run transition speed, not elite speed) can be erased by making him a safety.

Yes, all the complaining and extasy over White and ppl seem to be silent about the fact that we got two very physical, very hungry CB's early in the draft. This is why i love how we did this year. Not to mention the other aquisistions we've made. We retained Bell plus added wilson who played good when the Giants won the superbowl. We have seriously revamped this secondary. That has def been our primary focus and im pretty sure almost all of us wanted that! so we sure ourselves up a little better against this afc east recieving corps Plus we add some potential firepower to our offense as well.....this is fun, exciting football here, this is what i miss.

Sean Smith is NOT physical. That might be the #1 misconception on this board right now. The man is a former WR playing CB, and it's obvious in his tackling. (and his hands, too, which are better than most CBs)

Vontae is as physical as they come though.

I think we have the potential to have the best secondary in the division (if not the league) now. We have two of the three safeties who lead the league in tackles, with Culver and Clemons as backups. CB, perhaps the weakest position initially, may now have become a strength with the Allens, Smith, and Davis. Depending on how long it takes them to catch on, teams may begin to fear throwing on us.

Patriots Took Chung and Butler in the draft this year, and they took Merriweather two years ago. They just signed Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs, ultimately that's a pretty stacked secondary. I think we have the potential to be a better secondary, but they've made just as many good moves to secure their future as we have.

Plus, as much as I hate it, Rhodes and Revis are fantastic for the jets, and they're only getting better.

The fact is, Renaldo Hill may have been the least physical safety in the league. He was essentially a corner playing safety. Gibril Wilson, on the other hand, is a guy that will smack you in the mouth. Watching him and YB on the field together should be fun.

we have a very good secondary and it is going to be fun watching them knock people out
