If we could trade down to say 5 or 6 should we pick up Sedrick Ellis????? They were saying on ESPN that he would fit a 3-4 defense well.

if we were in the 5th or 6th spot and Glenn Dorsey wasnt there any more yea he would be a nice pick up but not at the #1 spot

I think he's the best available NT in the draft but at #1 he's not worth the pick. I would take him at like 4 or 5 but not at #1.

ellis is not a NT. he lacks the ability to take on multiple blockers at the point.

From what ive been reading on mock drafts is he's a way better fit 4 our team than Dorsey.it makes more sense.... To me anyways to trade down.I don't want Dorsey myself and I think picking Matt Ryan would be a little rash after we finally drafted a qb and a 2nd rounder at that. IMO ild trade down to get Ellis and give Beck a shot. Sorry about going A little off topic

Neither Ellis nor Dorsey are 3-4 NTs.

Both would project well as 3-4 DEs though.....

From what was reported from the Senior Bowl, Ellis was unblockable. They had to sit him because he was just mauling people in practice. In order to get any offensive practice in, they had to get Ellis off the field.

He may turn out to be a better player than Dorsey.

Thing is, I honestly feel that both of these guys talents would be wasted in the Parcells 3-4 2 gapping instead of trying to kill the QB.

the reason ellis was unblockable at the senior bowl was because they were playing his style of defense. the 4-3 straight up one on one blocking. as for being 3-4 ends, they lack the height parcells likes in his ends. most of the ends in his defense recently have been about 6'4 or so.

as for dorsey able to handle being the NT in the 3-4 he can definitely do it. the NT is supposed to tie up 2 blockers and thats something dorsey can do. the guy has got great leverage and lower body strength.

you may be right about Dorsey but hey....I will admit I am quite biased against LSU DEs/DTs at this moment.

Parcells went out and wanted to draft Marcus Spears with the #11 pick. Thankfully, Jerry won out and drafted Demarcus Ware. Spears ended up sliding down later into the 1st round where we drafted him at #20.

That said, Spears has been a HORRIBLE disappointment for Cowboys fans - enough so, that a 7th rounder Parcells drafted the same year from Auburn, Jay Ratliff, just got himself a new contract and is likely to replace Spears at LDE if Tank Johnson and Fergy prove to be able to anchor the nose.

You are absolutely right about Parcells and Ireland liking the DEs to run 6'4" + though.

Continuing that conversation regarding the Spear/Ware draft....

Miami finds themselves in a very similar situation that Dallas was in, in 2005.

I am EXTREMELY stoked to see what these guys will be able to do with the picks that Miami has. If they find a trade partner to move down...LOOK OUT!

Look at this 2005 draft.

Round Pick Player Pos School 1 11(11) Demarcus Ware OLB Troy 1 20(20) Marcus Spears DE LSU 2 10(42) Kevin Burnett OLB Tennessee 4 8(109) Marion Barber HB Minnesota 4 31(132) Chris Canty DE Virginia 6 34(208) Justin Berlault S Ball St. 6 35(209) Rob Petitti OT Pittsburgh 7 10(224) Jay Ratliff DE Auburn

They actually did HIT on Berlault....unfortunately, he injured his knee and ended up out of football due to it ending up being a degenerative knee condition....otherwise, every single one of these picks would have been hits.

There is great reason to be extremely optimistic. Jeff Ireland knows how to draft.

i agree but i thought Petitti was cut a couple of years ago but thats neither here nor there. im actually thinking we could have a very similar draft. chris long is our OLB/DE, pick up a linebacker or two and probably DE like a kendall langford in the 4th. if we could end up with a draft like 2005 then i would be happy.

Ellis is a potential NT. He played most of his career as a 1-gap NT at USC.
Dorsey has to be considered as well.

It's not rare for players to gain weight to play NT, go from 1-gap or 2-gap, or from other DT techniques to NT.

very true but i dont think ellis can without losing speed and quickness. how different is the 1 gap NT compared to the 2 gap?

Well, in 2-gap the NT is sitting over the Center and he reads and reacts to the run play and fills the gap on either side of the Center. In 1-gap, the NT is positioned over the gap between the Center and Guard, and penetrates there. The difference between the two I'd argue is that a 2-gap NT is susposed to get the double team, and the 1-gap NT will tend to get it by virtue of positioning, but it's just as well he doesnt and penetrates upfield to effect the play.

Generally speaking, 1-gap Nose Tackles can be smaller than 2-gap NTs. Parcells however, in the last two stops has had 6'3" 310 pound Jason Ferguson as his NT.

Petitti actually started 16 games at RT. Can't complain too much about that kind of production from a 6th round rookie. He lost out to Colombo, who Parcells and Ireland wisely allowed a full year to recover from a knee injury. They just stashed him on the roster and let him rehab.

Petitti was released in final cuts and landed with NO. He is still in the NFL on the Ram's Roster now.
