While I watch every play of every fin game...I do not analyze tapes of the games and isolate players for in-depth analysis...as some posters on this site do very well. So with that said...I would appreciate any insghts that you could provide on how well these 2 d-linemen have played their rookie year. Neither have stood out to me...while Lankford has made a few key plays during the season....Merling has been relatively quiet to me.... Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Well so far langford has outperformed Merling, but that is because Merling hasn't gotten much playing time. Merling has only 1 sack and i Believe Langford has 2. Both have Gotten very good pressure on the QB at times. Langford played about 50 snaps last game vs. the 49ers. Merling will likely be the better player in the long run, though both look pronising. Overall very good use of picks. You should be excited about these two. Langford is more of a Jason Taylor type while Merling bull rushes more. Both are getting in on at LEAST 20 snaps a game, most of the time 30-40. If i find aanymore on them, I'll ley you know.

Langford has indeed been better so far. Playing time has been a huge factor but I think we see him on the field more than Merling because he is a perfect fit in this scheme. A protypical 3-4 DE. I really wouldn't grade sacks from the position but rather leverage at the line of scrimmage. He has done that well.

As far as Merling I'm really not sure what is going to happen with the guy. Will they possibly try and and move him to OLB? i've asked myself this question quite often lately and I would not rule it out. I think he will be a great defensive player for us when he comes into his own.

One thing we have to keep in perspective is that the DE rotation has been real good this season. I was really hoping for that this season and it has happened. Starks is playing well. Holliday is tapering off but still very serviceable.

On draft day I was real surprised Merling fell to us. We had to take him. The Langford pick was a prime example of draft from the inside out. BP and JI obviously knew something about fitting a guy into the scheme.

We did good. Two young players who will definitely bolster this D in the future.

MERLING WILL NOT BE AN OLB!!!! WOW BRO PPL GET OVER IT IT WONT HAPPEN! the man is 295 LB!! he will need to lose 20 lbs to be even considered

merling will be fine at de, if not o well, but espn had langford in the top 30 rookies at the half way point

I think they have been good role players and still have a way to go. They will breakout sooner or later for us next season since they have learned the life of the nfl.

i personally think&believe Langford will be real good for us...Merling i'm not as confident on,but hey,he could turn into a straight beast for us like i think Langford will....

Well Merling is like Ronnie, we're not gonna see his real talent until we get him tons of reps in the games

I barely see Merling in

So.....um.....have you seen a guy named Matt Roth play OLB this year????? :scan:

Merling had some big tackles this year for us on a few goal line stands. He was injured going into the draft he will be fine.

Both seem to be good prospects. I was higher on Langford coming in because he really is the prototypical player for this system and he has played exceedingly well. He is getting a lot of playing time because of who else is here and the fact he is playing on the left instead of the right.

Merling has more lateral quickness and in the end will be more of a pass rushing RDE for us--definitely not fast enough to be a good pass rushing WOLB though. But with Merling you need to realize that he is/was coming off of an injury and that kinda gave him a late start. Plus, Vonnie Holiday is one of the leaders of our defense and locker room, so Merling has less opportunities to shine than Langford. Plus, not to be unkind, but Merling isn't a rocket scientist, so it'll take him a while to really master the position IMHO. Next year, when Merling has a healthy offseason and more time to absorb the technical side of things, and Vonnie Holiday is another year older, and Starks has to play more NT because Ferguson is also older, we will see a significantly improved Merling. But, I look for him to really break out around year 4 ... just my guess.

Ireland has done a fantastic job. This draft was about the lines, and while I think he will add a G and NT next draft, I suspect the focus will be on our LB corps while also plucking a CB, S and WR. That means we'll probably not be adding any new competition for Merling and Langford next offseason, at least not in the top half of the draft. Both are good young players who fit our scheme, and both will start in time.

yes i have, apparently you haven't.
Roth is 275 lbs not 295 first, second he wont be a starter next thing u can bank on that.

One thing to remember is that DE is a very difficult position for rookies to step in and be major factors, especially with the pass rush. It's a lot like the WR position. A lot of these guys succeed in college based on pure athleticism, but in the NFL, they really need to learn technique. Langford had 2 sacks in the first 2 games, and hasn't had one since. He also got run at a lot earlier in the year, which he clearly was not ready for. He was the stud at Hampton, and I don't think he expected teams to go right after him. He has improved a lot against the run as the season has gone on. Merling has been solid against the run, as all the scouting reports said he would be. I think that you will see him take the starting job from Holliday next season, which will be good for Holliday, too. IMO, he had his best pass rush of the season this last week. He put a great inside move on, and was immediately on top of the QB for a sack. But, he didn't get it because Roth was unblocked off the edge and beat him to it. But, Merling cleanly beat his man and was there early enough for the sack, too. Langford and Merling's pass rushing will be key to our success down the road. Right now, our pass rush is a major problem. We get the occasional good pressure from Porter or from someone else on a blitz. But, great defenses get consistent pressure from their D Lines. And right now, we get almost no pressure from the D Lline. That's the single biggest problem our secondary faces. There was one 3rd down this weekend where Hill had 6 seconds to find Isaac Bruce, who had time to make a triple move. That should never happen, and there's no way a secondary can defend that. Hopefully, Merling and Langford can remedy this in the future, because Holliday is not going to get any better at his age and Starks is strictly a run stuffer.

i have to disagree on starks, from what i see often times he gets penetration, and a good push on his pass rushes, couple of times last game in fact he was in on hill early.
