[Could a Mod please move this to the appropriate category for NFL Draft prospects? I put it under Miami Dolphins by mistake. Thanks.]

Before everyone gets all hot and bothered about what the sSenior Bowl tells us about next year's talent, please remember a few things:

1) With the season just ending we fans are STARVING for anything good to look forward to regarding our team. As a result, I think most fans put too much weight on what they hear about prospects at this time of year. The glimmer of hope to a drowning man...

2) The Senior Bowl can be misleading.

Last year Gabe Watson looked like MONSTER against the 'best' O-Linemen in the country at last year's Senior Bowl practices and in the game. This year in the NFL he registered only 12 tackles, four assists and one sack in 12 games.

Meanwhile, the Barry Cofield of the Giants had 32 tackles, 12 assists, 1.5 sacks and 3 passes defensed this NFL season... but he was not even invited to the Senior Bowl last year.

Maurice Jones-Drew, who did not play in the 2006 Senior Bowl went on to score 15 touchdowns (most by a rookie) this season. So does the Senior Bowl tell us who will dominate at the next level in 2007? Hardly.

The only thing it told us in '06 that was true is that Derek Hagan drops passes.

So enjoy learning some new things about next years prospects, but remember that the Senior Bowl performance is only one small piece of information you should consider in the history of a draft prospect. Getting too high on guys who "showed up" for two or three days is not the way to form an accurate picture, *especially* when not everyone gets to show up.

Cheers and enjoy the Senior Bowl!

Well, thanks for the lecture, but, while nothing is a perfect gauge of anything, I've found the Senior bowl extremely helpful(practices included) in evaluating players, there have been numerous cases of little known players coming there and shining, then proceeding to have great NFL careers.

well seeing as how maurice jones drew was junior and couldnt go to the senior bowl anyways......

You could say that about the combine and pro days too, but we have to get excited about something during the offseason.

On 790 last night the Joe Bailey show, he said the one thing that stood out with the majority of the coaching interviews was the talk about Derek Hagan, it seems there are quite a few people around the league that really like him. Take it for what it's worth, but there seems to be a lot of people that think he's got potential.

For every player who makes something out of himself by not going to the senior bowls, there are still plenty who do a lot of good for playing in the senior bowl.

Jay cutler last year helped his stock dramatically. Carnel Williams assured himself a top 5 pick because of his efforts during the senior bowl practices. But most importantly, the senior bowl practices are for the defensive guys. The practices are really the first and only opportunity our scouts get to see these guys run pro like drills on the defensive side of the ball.

the Bowl game itself might not be a great tool but the practices are. you get to see what they can do in pro drills and coaches like Jon Gruden find the players they want while coaching in it, he coached Carnell Williams, Alex Smith and Dan Buenning in the Senior Bowl than went on to draft them all because he liked what he saw while coaching them in the Bowl game

Gabe Watson did not have a great week of practice and looked slow in the process. He was supposed to be a mid to late 1st rounder (the second NT taken) but after teams saw him, teams shyed away. You cannot compare, atleast not accurately, stats of players on two different teams. Watson played in Arizona. Who on that line could have possible taken away some of the double teams from Watson? Cofield played for the Giants with Strahand and Umenyiora

The guy made a decent, logical point. I found the Gabe Watson point to be interesting.

you can't judge a guy in his rookie year, the guy could be a stud. one year doesn't mean anything

Watson DID have a great week of practice and was dominant of everyone who he went up against except Nick Mangold. He was arguably the star of the camp and was held out of some drills because he was unblockable and too disruptive of the whole process.

Also, hes a defensive player... on the CARDINALS. the CARDINALS. come onnnnn. Of course hes not doing well. he plays defense...for the CARDINALLLS.

 ...oh the cardinals...

The Senior Bowl (for those teams looking at it the right way) has developed into more of an opportunity for those lesser known guys who haven't had all the hype surrounding them or for those from a smaller, lesser known program to get some attention. With that said, no scout should base their draft positioning based solely on what they see during the practices or game. The player showing something should get their attention to where they then go and do some research on the player and get game films on them. Stats, records and hype should mean nothing compared to raw talent and technique which should show on the game films. Interesting question here would be, did our coaches do their homework last year before coming up with a draft list or did they buy into some of the hype ? I can't imagine we drafted based upon where they played or where the media had them slotted. I would assume not, but then again, neither of our first two picks were starters or looked like potential starters anytime soon.

I stand corrected. It was his work ethic leading up to the Senior Bowl that scouts questioned.
