Active Roster
With no rookies or Free Agent signings our depth chart after losing Sparano and going into 2012 season looked liked this :-
QB - Matt Moore
RB - Reggie Bush
FB - Charles Clay
WR - Brandon Marshall, Brian Hartline, Devone Bess
TE - Anthony Fasano
OL - Jake Long, Richie Incognito, Mike Pouncey, John Jerry, Nate Garner
DL - Starks, Soliai, Odrick, McDaniel
OLB - Cameron Wake, Koa Misi
MLB - Karlos Dansby, Kevin Burnett
CB - Sean Smith, Vernon Davis, Nolan Carroll, Jimmy Wilson
S - Chris Clemons, Reshad Jones
When you consider again this depth chart is without any offseason additions. We had a power running offensive line and a press 3-4 D in place. Rumour has it there was a disagreement between owner Stephen Ross who wanted Joe Philbin to become HC and GM Jeff Ireland who wanted Mike McCoy.
This is where I feel we made a massive error which has put us back years.
Mike McCoy worked wonders in Denver, creating a run heavy attack even with Tim Tebow at QB. After becoming HC in San Diego, they have one of the heaviest O'lines in NFL and Ryan Matthews has rushed for the most yards in his career. They drafted a WR in Keenan Allen who is more comparable to Brandon Marshall than Mike Wallace.
He has a 3-4 DC in John Pagano, who has similar traits to his brother Chuck where Vontae Davis has finally started to flourish.
We hired Joe Philbin, who wanted a WCO, with a ZBS and hired Kevin Coyle a 4-3 DC who prefers zone, off man coverage. This created square pegs in round holes and an inevitable roster turnover.
Just consider if we had hired Mike McCoy. Again the above roster is without any and I repeat not one FA signing or draft pick. When you consider that San Diego chargers recently drafted DJ Fluker, Manti Teo & Keenan Allen, all players who would have fitted with what we had.
I was surprised how loaded this roster was. I was one of those wanting Jeff Ireland out, but if rumour has it and he had hired his own man, we would IMO have been far more successful than we currently are.
