“He came in the same way I came in -- undrafted, having to prove himself,” Shelby said of Wake, who was undrafted out of Penn State, “and look at him now, a Pro Bowler, so why not take notes from that guy?”

The results of the “Cam Wake Off-Season Program” have been impressive. Shelby, with his quicker first step, is now contending for a job in the Dolphins’ Speed Package, the pass-rush grouping that features four speedy defensive ends whose sole purpose is making life miserable for quarterbacks.
The Speed Package consists of starting defensive ends Wake and Olivier Vernon alongside Shelby and Dion Jordan. Shelby owes much of his role to improved conditioning.
“I don’t want to say it was an issue (last season),” Shelby said, “but my burst has gotten better. Running extra with Cam definitely helps…He runs a little bit too much. In the weight room I can usually keep up.”
As it turns out, conditioning is a big part of Wake’s offseason workouts. Wake, the three-time Pro Bowl selection known for his high motor and unrelenting pursuit of the quarterback, especially in the fourth quarter, demands more of himself, and that’s the way he trains.

“As a D-end, rushing against guys that weigh a hundred pounds more than you, it’s third-and-10 in the fourth quarter and everybody’s looking at you like you have to have more gas in the tank, you have to get to the quarterback or you have to chase that running back down,” Wake said.

“So I put a different standard on myself, I’m going to run with the DB’s (defensive backs), I don’t care if I’m 260 (pounds), I’m going to run with (cornerback) Brent Grimes and (wide receiver) Mike Wallace and whoever. I’m going to make their time.

No wonder Cam is in such good shape, running with the db's.

Shelby is the forgotten man on our DL. He has played well, especially on the run.

hmmm...shelby with a better get off and ability to close could do damage...couldn't really close so far limiting the pass rush impact...will never have wakes gifts though

We should have an excellent pass rush...that includes the addiotion of Earl Mitchell who is very athletic.

It made the difference in the Cincy game. I still remember Wake being completely winded well after the game talking with the TNF crew, I don't remember the exact quote but it was something like 'the gas light was on, the check engine light was on, smoke coming out of it but we knew we had to keep going.' The defense was on the field most of the second half that game including a super long stretch as a result of Grimes int for a TD.

In the old days a coach could force players to be in tip top shape, these days you need to rely on them to motivate themselves. Thats why it's more important than ever to have as many actual football players on your team as possible rather than just athletic freaks.

It's not the pash rush that worries me.

It's the run D and being light in the box.

Big Paul is now gone and we have Odrick/Mitchell to rotate at DT.

Wake, Vernon, Jordan and Shelby. That defensive end group of four has to be one of the top groups in the entire league.

Shelby played less than half the snaps, best DE vs the run, and chimed in with 3 sacks, 3 hits, and 7 hurries. He needed a lot of work on the pass rush. Looking forward to seeing him this year.

Im a little confused. He does realize that he cannot run with Wallace no matter how much of a stud he is lol. Wake never seems to say asinine stuff like a lot of other guys so you cant help but cheer for him.

I got a thumbs down for this WTF lol

INteresting that Shelby has been considered for the speed package.
Shelby already steady against the run and now an extra burst!
Qb's will be panicking with the pressure of our DE's.

I can't wait for the 1-6 packages with Starks as the d-linemen and Wake, Vernon, Jordan, Shelby, Misi, and Ellerbe all playing linebacker.
