Shelby was very underwhelming but McCain still displayed some promise.

Shelby didn't show me anything yesterday thought he was suppose to be more balanced & at least help out with the run game? I saw no pressure from him either to the QB. I would not like him resigned for anything significant.

McCain showed promise i saw him in the backfield many times causing havoc but he missed on a couple of sacks hopefully we see him more but i liked what i saw from him.

I think he needs to be somewhere in the middle of the DE weight and the LB weight they want him at. He needs strength but also to not lose his athletic ability. I really think we would be a lot better off with McCain at sam and Misi at mike. instead of kelvin shepherd

So is Fede. He has been passed by McCain on the depth chart. A bit shocking considering how Fede was doing so well throughout pre season.

Shelby can set the edge against the run as well as hold his ground when they run at him. Those are his strengths. So, he has some value.

But he doesn't have the quick twitch burst to rush the passer. He is a free agent and his lack of burst should keep down what we should be willing to pay. You can find guys who can play the run. Pass rushers deserve more money IMO. It's a bigger skill. Of course, if you can find the complete guy, then you really have something. It's tough to find.

Bottom line, I wouldn't pay a ton to keep Shelby. Ok money for an Ok guy.

I am not sold on McCain. It won't hurt for the new coaching staff to give him a shot next season. As for Shelby and Fede they are good depth players but they are not quality starting NFL DEs. Vernon is a huge disappointment and will be gone next season. The Dolphins will need to draft 2 DEs. With so many other needs and limited resources they may only get one quality starter at DE in 2016. It's going to take some time to build the defense into a dominant one.

Shelby is a very strong run defender and very capable of being a good strong side end. The key to that is having a true edge rusher at the other end or running a 3-4 personnel out of a 4-3 like Seattle has the past few years.
