"Consistency is always good, but as you know with this business that's not always the case. So you have to adapt to whatever situation comes up. But hopefully this will be my home for a while," said Smith, who signed with the Dolphins after visiting the Giants and the Patriots.
When Miami promoted Benton to offensive line coach, Smith became a candidate for the roster because of the relationship the two had in Houston, and Smith's knowledge of Benton's zone-blocking scheme. Smith got the call to join the Dolphins during the weekend of his wedding, he answered, even though it caused him to miss a few rehearsal dinners.
"It's just a lot of young talent on the team and a lot of potential, and I feel like everybody is moving in the right direction here. And I feel like we're going to have a lot of success in the future so I was excited to join," Smith said.
Smith says he's a good fit for the Dolphins' zone-blocking system because he is athletic, can climb the line of scrimmage and capture the edges against linebackers.
Smith said the group has already moved on from last season's struggles and adversity to become a close-knit unit.
"We've got some characters in the room and the guys are great. They're hard working and funny. We spend a lot of time together. It makes it easier when you have a good group of guys like that. We all get along great," Smith said.
