"Consistency is always good, but as you know with this business that's not always the case. So you have to adapt to whatever situation comes up. But hopefully this will be my home for a while," said Smith, who signed with the Dolphins after visiting the Giants and the Patriots.

When Miami promoted Benton to offensive line coach, Smith became a candidate for the roster because of the relationship the two had in Houston, and Smith's knowledge of Benton's zone-blocking scheme. Smith got the call to join the Dolphins during the weekend of his wedding, he answered, even though it caused him to miss a few rehearsal dinners.
"It's just a lot of young talent on the team and a lot of potential, and I feel like everybody is moving in the right direction here. And I feel like we're going to have a lot of success in the future so I was excited to join," Smith said.
Smith says he's a good fit for the Dolphins' zone-blocking system because he is athletic, can climb the line of scrimmage and capture the edges against linebackers.

Smith said the group has already moved on from last season's struggles and adversity to become a close-knit unit.

"We've got some characters in the room and the guys are great. They're hard working and funny. We spend a lot of time together. It makes it easier when you have a good group of guys like that. We all get along great," Smith said.

Lots of good stuff lately gafin. Thanks for posting.

I really like the fact Benton has already worked with Shelly. We knew what we got when we signed him. Coach must have liked his potential and probably recommended him to Hickey. We need him to step up big time.

Fortunately for Smith, the Dolphins' two-year offer worth a reported $5.5 million came with the same scheme and position coach he worked with during his stint in Houston. Though he is currently the starter at left guard and his relationship with offensive line coach John Benton helped him land the gig, Smith said he knows nothing is guaranteed in the NFL.
Right guard

The Dolphins added Smith and veteran Branden Albert through free agency while also drafting Ja'Wuan James with the 19th pick in the NFL Draft and Billy Turner early in the third round. Guard Dallas Thomas, who the Dolphins drafted in the third round in 2013, currently tops the depth chart on the right side of the line.

I have watched and rewatched all the clips of Shelly that I can find, and I just can't be convinced that he has the talent to turn into a consistent pass blocker. I know Lazor is very interested in powerful run blockers and Shelly certainly fits that bill, but I don't see that he has the natural ability to make it as a starting guard when it comes to pass blocking. He seems to lunge/guess at the defender, he plays low enough to be good, but even though his plays low he still seems to get thrown off his feet too easily. He tends to stay with his man too long even on obvious twist and stunts. His awareness is just not good enough. He always seems to be overmatched and doesn't play with confidence.

If I were the QB and Shelly was my starting RG I would struggle keeping my eyes down field. Not only does he get beat too much but when he gets beat he often gets beat straight off the snap which puts instant pressure on the QB. He will be a solid addition if he is used as an extra TE on GL and short yardage, and maybe even could be brought in late in games to close teams out when we have a lead, but if he is our day one starter RT17 won't be any better off than he was last year IMO, to be honest it will be worse because the pressure will get to him even faster than it did last year.

You dont pay a guy 2 years 5.5 million to be an extra te. Hes starting. And if youre on point holy **** Im scared

Hope I'm wrong, but go check out what I wrote about Martin right after we drafted him. I was thrown under the bus by pretty much everyone for saying he would never be a quality starter. On the flip side I also said after the Dallas Thomas pick that in 3 years he could be one of our best OLman. So far that hasn't proven true but I am sticking to my guns and have high hopes for Dallas. I think he will be very solid this year.

Hope your right about Dallas Ktown. Between him Smith and Turner we really need a couple good starters to step forward.

Shelly's salary is a bargain if he's our starter.

Smith was such a good candidate for Benton's scheme in Houston that he never played an actual game for them before he got cut lol
He was there two years one IR and the other plain just didn't play.
Benton was so impressed with Smith that he waived him multiple times.
Its two years later and maybe he has seen the development but not sure their relationship worked out very well for them last time

Was it his "2" offensive snaps last season that have you so high on Thomas

It is significant that Benton remained interested enough to now want him 2 years later, I didn't know the background story. You can hear Benton telling Shelly to show me you have what it takes to be a starter. Smith has been given a chance but Billy Turner has much superior upside. This could be a contest in Training Camp.
