Shemar Stewart

My friend is an Aggie alum and goes to every game, knows the team and program well.
His scouting report on Shemar:

Not surprised he tested well. physical freak but gets out muscled and pushed around. Doesn't show great leverage against better tackles and OL
Can blow up a backfield and stuff the run, can chase down a play from the other side, knocks down a lot of passes
Was outplayed by their other end, Nic Scourton, for most of last season
Thinks Stewart could be a 10 sack guy with better coaching, thought the light was starting to come on under Mike Elko. Thought that Jimbo Fisher didn't get nearly enough out of him but that was the case with many Aggie 4 and 5 star players. Needs more strength and better coaching.

I'm gonna flip flop, back to saying I don't want Stewert, the more I look into him, his lack of production really trumps his combine performance.

Hard to imagine he'd get past the Bears at 10. They need two OG's and a Center in Chicago, they aren't going to find that at No.10. And with picks 39 and 41 in round 2, they can address their lone big defensive need with Stewart in round 1.

You'll NEVER hear a complaint from me about drafting a DE (or CB) in round 1.
Iggy?? LOL

Yep, totally agree. Stewart is the kind of player (if he pans out) who makes you better in any defensive scheme and in any down-and-distance situation. That kind of versatility is extremely rare. We also have a huge need on the DL.

In general, I like the idea of getting much better in our defensive front seven at the expense of the secondary. I just don’t think it’s that hard to find passable players in the secondary, but if you can’t stop the run or rush the passer, your defense is DOA.
He's a bum! We need players that love to play ball. That's not this guy.

I'm no pro scout but I've tracked most of the players I liked and although I'm not perfect, I can say I hit on most.

I've learned that if I'm not sure or I keep flopping back n forth, those players tend to land between below average and average players in the nfl. Sometimes you may feel like you don't want to be wrong and it may be a reason why you're unsure. Just be confident he doesn't have it and be ok that you may be wrong.

But is it LIKELY?

I remember people telling me that Tua was big enough, and sturdy enough... and that injuries wouldn't be a problem.

Were you one of them?
I am a tua fan but I never said that. I don't make claims like that.

There are... but there are also expectations. Here's what a couple of the sites have said...

Zierlein at NFL.com

Weaknesses

  • Far below height standards for NFL starting tackles.
  • Inconsistent running feet under his hands as a drive blocker.
  • Gets outreached and separated by long edge-setters.
  • Not a deep bender and turns to leaning at times.
  • Must prove his anchor against NFL speed-to-power rushers.
Draft Buzz isn't the best site, but here's what they said...

The LSU game highlighted both his potential and limitations against quality edge rushers. While his technique and leverage won many reps, longer defenders occasionally gave him problems. His combination of quick feet and strong hands helps compensate for height limitations, but NFL power rushers will test his anchor early. The technical foundation is encouraging - his varied pass sets and blitz recognition show advanced processing - but there's still work needed on consistent hand placement.

and...

  • Height is well below NFL tackle standards at 6'3" - while he compensates with length and technique, some teams may pigeonhole him as a guard convert regardless of tape.
It isn't just me. This is a known issue with this player. There are a LOT of teams who wouldn't even consider him as a Tackle for just this reason.
I never thought it was coming from you I figure you read it somewhere.

Stewart is the quintessential gamble on greatness. If he puts it all together, he'll be All-Pro.

First of all... a brief apology... I might be a-fixin' to be a little sarcastic here... (bear with me).

Last year, a number of us stated quite clearly that Chop Robinson was THE physical freak among the OLB-type Edges last year, but the crybabies (here's the sarcasm that I warned you about) sniffed... but his production! If he was any good, he would have put up sooo many more sacks.

I guess they were.... WRONG (as Ray would jabber).

Chop had/has a nightmarish first step and as one of the youngest players in the draft, he just hadn't put it all together yet. The classic, decent floor/astronomical ceiling prospect. ...and he came on as the season progressed, even though his running buddies were... umm... old, and less than stellar.

But Fever... (you say)... I thought your title said Shemar Stewart?

Can you say, hit me again, Chris.

Shemar KILLED the Combine... just killed it. He put up some of the best numbers, not just of this combine but historically.

I already liked him.

Now he is the #1 prospect on my board at 13. Pairing these two would give us a dream pass rush. One power/speed, and one with a dynamite twitch.

If he's on the board and we pass. I'll cry... out loud.
You should watch Shemar's tape....he plays the game in right way. Its more impressive than combine numbers. I'm actually upset that his combine numbers are this good...he might not be there at 13 now.

I wouldn't hate Stewart at 13, but I wouldn't love it either. As MrClean noted, there's a big difference between not getting sacks and not being an effective pass rusher. Robinson was a very effective pass rusher at Penn State, and he led the 2024 Class in quick-pressure rate (Pearce Jr leads the 2025 class).

It's unlikely that Stewart ever develops into a great player. He should be a good player, as his tools give him a high floor, but his football IQ is comically low - in addition to his lack of skill/refinement.

Elijah Roberts should be there at 48 - maybe even 98 - and he's actually a good player. Ran a 4.78 at 285 lbs.

Pearce Jr shouldn't be available anyway, but I wouldn't sacrifice greatness for fit. Stylistically, Robinson and Pearce Jr would be like Ware and Miller (except Ware was passed his prime when he played with Miller).
If we take a bigger Edge type to pair with Chop, I'd take Landon Jackson over Shemar. He also tests well and is just simply a better player on the field.
