What would you guys say are the chances of this guy making the team as a DB, and his chances at being our best KR/PR?

Also, does anybody have the inside scoop on this guy.........

Saban had this to say today:

(On the progress of Shirdonya Mitchell) – “Really this is the first time that he’s actually been out on the field, been coached and had to play with some responsibility. We don’t really view him a whole lot different than some of the other guys when it comes to really trying to do some of the things that we want him to do. We are pleased with the progress that he’s made. He’s certainly going to compete for corner spot on our team this year.”

I think he makes the team. Scouts said that he was a terrific athlete when he was coming out of the draft in 2005. He runs a 4.34 40 time and has only played cornerback for 2 years ( junior and senior year of college,started...played reciever his first 2 years.) Is raw in many ways but Saban specialty is cornerback. He's fast and has athletic ability which are 2 things that you can't teach.

Miami Dolphins sign CB Shirdonya Mitchell
By Hugo Guzman
05/04/2005

The Dolphins may have picked up a true diamond in the rough this past week. One of the various Miami Dolphins free agents signed this past week is a ball-hawking, speedy cornerback who was projected to be drafted in the fourth or fifth round before injuring his knee during a "Pro Day" workout in March.

Shirdonya Mitchell - a converted wide receiver who played cornerback and returned kicks for the University of Missouri - was signed by Nick Saban despite the fact that he is in the midst of rehabilitating a torn ACL and LCL. Mitchell, who has posted sub 4.4 forty yard dash speed and can bench press 225 pounds nearly 20 times, is being dubbed as a "good risk" by the Dolphins head coach. Saban is prepared to hold Mitchell out for an entire year if need be, even though he could be ready to play as early as August of this year. According to what the coach has seen in tapes, Mitchell has excellent ball skills and is well-suited to cover the deep ball.

If Shirdonya Mitchell works out and ends up being a real player, he will be a welcomed addition to a Dolphins secondary that just lost Patrick Surtain - one of the top 3 cornerbacks in the NFL.

Saban said he will compete for a starting role as CB on the team this year...so I pretty much would assume he will atleast make the team.

I love it. Just another good player who was shunned because of injury. Saban puts the guy away on the shelf for a year, waits til he's healthy, and then he's uncovered a possible DIAMOND. This is totally one of Saban's things he likes to do. He has no problem getting an injured guy and waiting for a year for the payoff to come through.

Gotta love it!

In fact, Saban has quite a few guys "incubating" for at least a year, and they're not even injured. Like M. Wright and Vickerson.

On a similar note, what about Kyle Eckel? I dont see him on the roster.

At last report, Eckel is still fulfilling his Navy commitment but should be available for camp this summer.

Not that I dont trust you, but where did you see/hear this?

Just out of curiosity.

Like I said, at last report which was a few of months ago.

Rookie fullback Kyle Eckel was placed on Miami"s reserve-military list after being called up by the Navy. Eckel, who attended the Naval Academy, joined the Dolphins on Sunday after being released by New England.

It usually calls for a one year commitment unless it is extended.
