I was reading an article on Bleacher Report(which I usually always take with a grain of salt) and it mentioned that Tony McDaniel is set to make over $4 million this year. That's a lot especially for a depth guy who has only 2 starts the last two years and registered only 2.5 sacks the both of the last two years. I didn't realize that he was in for that kind of money this season which makes me ask the question if we should release him? Now I know that we have also lost Merling as well as Langford this offseason but I wonder if this money can be used elsewhere. Maybe in Longs extension or even to reach a one year deal with a veteran like Andre Carter.

What do you guys think?

Yeah, he's definitely overpaid, but at the same time a key player along the D-line. Yes, technically he's a depth player, but versatile. Not to mention the increasing importance of depth along the D-line to keep up an effective pass rush (see: Giants). I don't think we cut him as I'm not sure if there is anyone ready to take his place, but wish there was a way to get his cap number down.

Yes he is over paid for a second rotation player. But cutting him would leave us with no depth.

McDaniel is a solid player when called upon. I think re-structure of contract would be better, specially since we lost Langford. Only REAL depth at DT is McDaniel and 1/2 of Odrick since he would be playing DE.

He is a good depth and role player. He is making a lot, but if you cut him you start to thin out the depth on the defensive line. Unless they need a lot of money to sign a free agent, I don't see why they would need to cut him. This is the last year of his contract, so it isn't like you are clearing cap space for 2013.

Isn't he on the veteran exception deal they introduced after the new CBA was signed? Rather pay him the 3 million and get a comp pick off him when he walks next year.

The MO recently has been to let peoples contracts play out. With our cap situation healthy for next year, dont see it happening. He is excellent depth. Now if someone like Baker or one of these young ones comes out of the woodwork....thats a diff story. But not likely.

Why cut him now?
I was all for it if the end game was to extend cam wake... but now that that's taken care of, whats the rush for cutting him now?

I like having a rotation of good players along the defensive line. McDaniel's name popped up on lots of underrated players lists in 2010 and I think he played with a big cast/club on one of his hands last year. I say we just keep him, why create another hole. I'm always a fan of keeping the best players over saving Money as after all it's not my money.

the time to cut him was a couple months ago. How, we should keep him and let him contribute as a solid rotational player

If we needed some cap room and were in a bind, then I could see that happening, but no other reason to cut him at this point.

Haven't kept up with the Jake Long contract talks as of late. If it means getting Long to a contract extension then cut him. McDaniel may resign for less. If not, there will be other options available when other teams release players.

So, when Langford was let go...who do you think was his replacement?
