Should McDaniel be cut?

The Dolphins would save around $2.7 million on the salary cap if they cut Tony McDaniel, and I think they should do it if Kheeston Randle and/or Ryan Baker show anything.

Jared Odrick is a defensive tackle trying to play defensive end. You ask where's the depth at DT if you cut McDaniel, well there it is right there. You have Soliai, Odrick and Starks, and that's plenty. Behind them you have Randle and Baker and I believe both are roster worthy. The Dolphins have too many DTs, not enough DEs, IMO.

How many off-seasons we gonna carry Ryan Baker wondering if he's going to show something? You do not cut a capable veteran no matter what those guys do in OTA's, TC's, or vs. scrubs in preseason fodder. You pay a premium for quality depth along the D-line in this league. You don't manage it like a miser.

Just so I'm not misinterpreting you here. When you say an extra 3mil in space do you mean like if we have 127mil standard cap space next year but if we cut McD and save that 3mil we would actually have 130mil cap space next year?

More or less. Let's say this year's salary cap is $120 million and the Dolphins are right at that salary cap with $120 million perfectly spent in salaries. Next year's spending cap is going to be $127 million. You cut Tony McDaniel and suddenly you're only spending $117 million of the $120 million spending cap this year. Next year, you write a letter to the commish saying you'd like to roll that $3 million forward. He does. Now your 2013 spending limit is $130 million instead of $127 million.

I've watched Ryan Baker play and he's rosterable. If you need him out there I don't think he embarrasses himself. Tony McDaniel is better, but is he $3 million better than Baker? Is he $3 million better than Kheeston Randle? I don't know why you're talking about OTAs. We're talking about training camp and preseason when the pads come on and everyone's fighting to make the team. If McDaniel isn't significantly better than Baker and/or Randle then I'm cutting him. You rotation at the DT position won't be harmed. You're still 3, 4, 5 deep at that position.

Useless? Man the posts just keep getting better and better.

He played in a 4-3 in Jacksonville before we converted him to a 3-4 end. Teams absolutely must have depth at the DT spot in a 4-3, which McDaniel provides, especially coming in on passing downs because Soliai will not be in that package.

Reading is fundamental...I was referring to Langford...not McDaniel....

McDaniel is a beast. Let's see what he can do in a 4-3 before we talk about cutting him.

I wasn't aware you could do that.

So far the FO is making all the right moves so I have two theories: either he's been busting his butt during the off season like never before (and the coacing staff has taken note of such), or Philbin has other ideas for him. (Shoulders shrug) Who knows really?

it makes no sense at all to cut him, hes in his contract year and will probably not be back next year but he gives us good depth

its not like we are going to cut him and sign a big free agent and we have the money to sign all our rookies with mcdaniels on our roster.

he is overpaid but we need the depth this year.Let him and Starks battle it out for next years roster spot.Cant afford both
