As a fan who has watched football since the early 1970's, it seems like there is no defense in the NFL anymore. A big part of that is simply the rule changes that have limited what defensive backs can do, how the defense can hit the quarterback etc. I understand it's all mostly for the safety of the players and to add entertainment value. Most fans would probably prefer a 42-40 game to a 10-7 one.

The best defenses make a few more stops and big plays than most defensive units. So, defense is still important. But most offensive drives seem to end because the offense makes mistakes like holding penalties, dropped passes etc. The best offenses are almost unstoppable.

That leads me to my point. Is it still true that defense wins championships, or has it now totally flipped? KC and New England are generally regarded as the best teams in the AFC. Neither plays defense very well. Jacksonville may have the best defense in the NFL and the Jaguars are around .500 because they don't have a viable quarterback. In the NFC, the Rams are absolutely loaded on both sides of the ball, but that is a rarity in today's NFL.

Is it time for Miami to spend the majority of their resources - draft picks, free agency and trades - on the offense? The Dolphins don't have a very good offense to begin with so they definitely need help on that side of the ball.

Are teams getting it wrong loading up on defense?

No.

A good D can and will shut down a high performance offense.

I’d rather have a decent O and a superb D than the other way around.

Dan Marino gets this.

im an offensive guy, and my opinion is you draft talent on offense and combine that with a defense that overachieves based on scheme. see: NE Pats if you disagree.

We kinda already did that. Look at how much draft and FA capital on that side of the ball. Thill was a 1st, although they should have more invested behind him. No need to go nuts at RB in today's NFL but Drake was a 3rd. The WRs combined are making a pretty penny and Parker was a 1st. A 2nd and 4th spent on TE in the last draft. Multiple 1sts on the line with a bunch invested in Sitton.

They've invested there for years ... just a bunch of bad picks and FA moves to show for it with an outlier here and there.

That's a good point. Obviously, the team has to make the right moves which it hasn't done consistently enough.

Plus I like the defensive talent at the top of the next draft.

Although I would be cool with throwing all the FA money at the oline provided they aren't old and/or injury prone. Not that I trust this group in FA, but I trust them even less in the draft given the track record. Get some proven guys out there and watch the offense not be so terrible.

I'm a defensive first guy and those DT's in this upcoming draft are very exciting. I can't remember the last time there was that kind of quality at the position.

Because all these talented DT's are coming into the league, that makes offensive guard for Miami even more important. The front office has to get it right on the offensive line. It's too bad Sitton got hurt because I think he would have really helped solidify the unit.

Give me great LOS play -- on each side of the ball.

Give me perfect pass pro with Danny throwing the pig!

Give me Arns handing the D!

Etc. Etc.

But most of all -- give me a GREAT GM like Beathard and a HC like Shula!

And for gawds snakes --------- get Ross the Clown the hell outta here!

We got wr. we need better QB and og. Maybe lb and cb. Ur not going stop good offense team w all these rule.. this is passing league now. It setup for passing QB. So if u go draft QB. Find one who can throw ball all over field

Absolutely, We need a QB, WR, and Guard. Think if we get a new Defense Coach. This defense can do well. Burke sucks. But we really need a QB 1st, WR 2nd, Guard 3rd. But if i was running this. Ill get a Guard in free agency, and go DT in the 3rd round. No question a QB in 1st round, WR in the 2nd.

You still need both. But I think Offense is starting to be more important. That great defense will get you to playoffs but when you get there you are going to face the best offenses in the league. Most defenses won’t hold up and will need that big offensive output in the playoffs games to win it all.

There are so many needs on both side. We are probably 3 to 4 solid drafts away from being a real team. And I mean solid drafts by not drafting players like Harris or DVP.

The real issue is no matter which approach the Dolphins choose to take, they’ll screw it up with terrible personnel decisions.
