As a fan who has watched football since the early 1970's, it seems like there is no defense in the NFL anymore. A big part of that is simply the rule changes that have limited what defensive backs can do, how the defense can hit the quarterback etc. I understand it's all mostly for the safety of the players and to add entertainment value. Most fans would probably prefer a 42-40 game to a 10-7 one.
The best defenses make a few more stops and big plays than most defensive units. So, defense is still important. But most offensive drives seem to end because the offense makes mistakes like holding penalties, dropped passes etc. The best offenses are almost unstoppable.
That leads me to my point. Is it still true that defense wins championships, or has it now totally flipped? KC and New England are generally regarded as the best teams in the AFC. Neither plays defense very well. Jacksonville may have the best defense in the NFL and the Jaguars are around .500 because they don't have a viable quarterback. In the NFC, the Rams are absolutely loaded on both sides of the ball, but that is a rarity in today's NFL.
Is it time for Miami to spend the majority of their resources - draft picks, free agency and trades - on the offense? The Dolphins don't have a very good offense to begin with so they definitely need help on that side of the ball.
Are teams getting it wrong loading up on defense?
