I haven't seen anyone talk about it yet, so I thought I would. I dont know if many of you are scared to say it 'cause I dont like admitting it either but Sean Smith is not playing good football right now. In noooo way am I saying the guys a bust or anything crazy like that. Im very excited about this guys future but I think mentally, when he gets beat/makes a mistake, it looms in his head and it hurts his play.

I dont want his rookie season to hurt his progression so I for one would like to see him NOT get benched, but get demoted. He's not made to be a nickel corner so I would say take him out on 2 WR sets, but put him in on 3 WR sets and move him to the outside reciever.

Who would I like to start on the outside?.. Well this is where I lose many of you guys..Nate Jones. This guy has played outstanding football this year, aside from Sundays game against Welker but then again Welker leads the NFL in receptions and yards per game so I'll give him a pass. But I really see Nate Jones playing very well this year and I would like to see him play more.
Sean Smith scares me too much.

2 plays specifically (both in the 4th quarter):
-He actually got beat, no sorry, not beat, killed on a deep pass to Sam Aiken in which the ball was barely overthrown. Aiken makes that catch, Fins probably lose that game.
-Patriots final drive after we kick the field goal. Jason Allen is on Welker, Sean Smith is on Aiken. Both guys are lined up on the right. Brady throws a nice deep ball to Aiken. The ball hits him in both hands but luckily Aiken drops it when he contacts the ground!

-There's also the 81 yard TD reception from Brady to Aiken but I dont know how to take that play 'cause Smith had great coverage.. So was it a freak play? Or did Smith get beat? He should've tipped that ball at the least but a better corner intercepts that pass.

-Notice on these three plays, who is Sean Smith covering?...Not Randy Moss, not Wes Welker but Sam Aiken! This cant be happening against a teams #3 reciever.

I am definitely not being a hater on Smith but I just feel right now in the very early part of his career, Smith is not playing good football. He gets beat a lot, and against #2 and #3 recievers for the most part.

And who you going to replace the "rookie" with? He's doing better than our 1st rounder on ST's.

I think you have some very valid points. I support both the young corners a lot, but as of right now I'd have to say only Vontae is making plays. Everyone wants to harp on Davis for a number of big plays he gives up, but he also MAKES big plays (**see big interception last week against NE)... Smith, for all his big plays in preseason, has done very little when the games actually count. Smith has made some excellent pass break-ups, but still has yet to actually be the impact player he looked like me might be. I could very well be wrong, but it looks like Smith is having a slower learning curve than Vontae (who appears to improve weekly). Again, I have no proof of this, just my opinion and own observations.

CK made a couple great posts how both rookie corners have been acceptable for rookies (and potentially surpassed SOME expectations) but need serious improvement overall. Miami does ask way too much out of their rookie corners on defense (and it doesnt help we have essentially two SS's sitting behind them to help).

At this point in the the year, I'm not sure Smith should be demoted, but he def. needs to step up his game. Maybe running a rotation between him and Nate Jones would motivate him to play better/smarter? Smith has one major thing going against him, and its his inexperience at the position. Right now Vontae can get by on occaison by pure athleticism and closing speed, but Smith's game is predicated on using his head and his height/length (thus leaving him with less room for error IMO).

hell no!

Ummm that "1st rounder on ST's" is one of the reasons we WON on Sunday.. he shut Welker down....

If u would have read my post, i was suggesting starting Nate Jones who has played well at times this year. Hes broken up more passes and more Ints this year than Smith

WoW one bad game and you want to bench Smith. He was not lined up with Welker, Nate Jones was. Also on the play Aiken scored that was luck & just an outstanding play by Aiken.

The only play I actually saw Aiken beat Smith was on the deep throw that was slightly overthrown. The other play Smith is right there with Aiken and actually makes a slight play on the ball causing the drop. I mean other than that the kid has been solid all season. He played awesome against Evans and played real good against Mohamed on Thursday. No reason to sit a guy for one bad game.

Jones is awesome at the nickle position and I would not want Allen or Smith playing the position. I love Jones, but right now he is nursing a hamstring injury and he will not get the nod over Smith. Plus him being undersize does not help.

The biggest thing that bothers me about Sean Smith is a wuss and doesn't know how to tackle at all. He makes Sam Madison look like a hard hitting DB. Sean Smith tackles like little girl who is afraid. At his size he should be 1,000 times better then he is when it comes to tackling

This isnt about one bad game. Hes been getting beat all year round. On the shorter routes, hes always "around" the reciever but he gives too much space. Evans beat him deep btw. and on the final drive, Aiken drops the pass plain and simple, ball hits him right in the hands, he makes contact with the ground and drops the ball on impact, lucky for us. against carolina, well luckily for him, he was going against the most inaccurate NFL QB.

I like Jason Allen, I always have . . . always been an enigma to me why we don't stick with him more . . . but we have seen 3 coaching regimes and he still can't start, so that speaks volumes to me. I am glad he still contributes and maybe all he needs is a chance. He played decent when we had the Safeties go down in 07 . . . and he was playing some solid man CB last year, until he met Moss the second time and Moss won. He showed up against Moss this year and broke up a pass in the endzone and this last game they threw him on Welker and Welker had no more catches . . . not that I can remember. Kid has been solid when I see him for the most part.

That being said . . . I like Sean Smith and we should not "demote" him . . . especially for Nate Jones . . . that just isn't smart. Jones is a decent nickel who is solid on the blitz and has played decent coverage this year . . . but I wouldn't want him starting opposite of Vontae . . . imagine putting him on Moss . . . yea thats what I thought, because when Vontae went down the first New England game . . . they didn't think twice, they put Allen in place of Vontae . . . and if Smith went down, I have a strong feeling they would do the same.

Come on man... wth.

Sean was stride for stride with him, perfect throw.. Drops when he contacts the ground?? Watcha replay man.. Sean knocks the ball out of his hand on the way down from the catch. Smith made the play that saved us from possibly losing! Sean is playing decent at worst for a 2nd rd rookie! If Vont didnt get that pick in the endzone would he be " demoted?" The other throw Aiken made a great play, smith was all over him. And it was WILSONS fault for the td. Wilson was basicly walking when they went up for the jump ball.. You guys need to lighten up

he's getting beat, he's making plays... he's doing both

and to learn how to play in this league, you're gonna have to go through the good and the bad... much like in life, there's no better way to improve than to make mistakes and learn from them

They're giving those two rookie corner an awful lot of playing time and that's just what the doctor ordered for them to pick the nfl game quicker.

ESPECIALLY sean smith, who has been playing cornerback for 3 years in his life. He needs ALL the reps he can get

And NYJ's we're looking to bench Revis after getting beat by Ginn for a TD......

or maybe CB's get beat here and there including the best of them. S.Smith is fine, his coverage has been solid and he's only gonna get better. Let's not shake his confidence and N.Jones is playing well in situational matchups who's to say he doesn't get beat on a regular basis when played fulltime!
