Ross has said that the team is closer than many think. I'm not seeing it. There is the possibility of replacing starters at RB, TE, 2 OG's, 2 DE's, DT, 2 LB's, S, and 2 CB's. We are good on our kickers. :) That's a dozen starters with new coaches and schemes on O and D. Ross and I apparently differ on the definition of close.

We have signed a lot of FA's in recent years. If you look at the results, what do we have left on this years team? Albert who has been healthy for around half of the last two seasons. Grimes who gave a couple of VG years but is now old. Suh who is a great player. Wake, a borderline FA from Canada, who has been Great but is now old. That's it. They all cost a ton of money and what does the team have to show for it? Winning 8 games?

I'm hoping for some reality and direction this year from our new staff but, doubt Ross will allow it. I want to keep our own in OV and Miller, young building blocks, and sign young FA's as a few more additional building blocks at OG, CB, and maybe another one or two if they are options.

I have to move on from Grimes, Wake (?), plan the same for Albert next year, and Misi. They cannot be in the future plan for this team. It's time to move on and target 2017 to be a legit contender. Our future is not now. JMO

Ross also said this will take time. From a fans perspective you always want be in win now mode. The way I see it though, 2016 doesn't look too promising so I would rather take the contract hits (Suh, e.g.) this year and start looking ahead. Grimes and Mitchell need to go, Wake also needs a long hard look to determine what his value is to the future of this team. Use free money to retain Miller, Vernon and Shelby. Go young in free agency and avoid oft injured players. There is no real fix for this defense in one year, going to have to take our lumps. Get the guard positions settled this year because it is likely that Albert and Pouncey may be gone next year. Work on building a foundation this year and get things settled for the new coaches and make 2017 a year to get a few big signings.

They already are targeting 2017 by paying RT that much dough

I am not sure just how stable they are as a franchise.

'Long Term' does not seem like a phrase either Ross or T-bomb can sit with.

What will happen if they win fewer games this season, or if they finish at .500?

I get the sneaky suspicion that Ross will start to look around and change everything again, not immediately but he will serve notice...

then it will be every man for himself just like it has been every season since he bought the team and set up 'his' team hierarchy

Completely agree. Keep our own young guys, add a couple more in FA at OG and CB, add 2-3 more in this year's draft, and give them as well as the new coaches a year to fit in. Sounds like a plan.

PS- Thanks again for the poll help which I remembered and actually put one up. :)

??

I'm referring to the length of the contract they signed him to, not where he rates to all the other QBs.

RT's deal has an out for the team after this year, and if he plays well his $20M cap hit next year will be restructured.

We need to cut as much of the dead weight this year and finish up next year. We need to have very good drafts going forward to develop young talent and add depth. You need to allow Adam and staff time to learn and grow as a team. We have to make great decisions in free agency. I say 2017 or 2018.

He will glady restructure because that just makes his other years cap hits higher , more guaranteed money and the lesser chance of getting cut because of a much higher dead money hit

The thread is about 2016 and 2017. We got a good deal on Tannehill this year. If he doesn't get better this year then you need not worry about his salary.

For me, I do not care about the win total this year IF I see young players fitting in, developing, and improving. I cannot remember when the team has taken this approach, and it has been proven to actually work.

All the quick fixes have done, over many years, is to give us a lower draft pick.

FWIW, this is NOT a Tannehill thread but, one for the direction of our team trying to move forward.

I chose long term rather than quick fix. We will have a lot of holes this season, too many to do in one season. I have faith in the offense being better, but defense will struggle this year. Just my opinion.
