We shouldnt have a chance this year .. looking back at our scores last year i realized just how close we were in many of them .. the jets *** kicking aside .. we had been in all those games last year ... minus a few less feely and fiedler pick sixs things would have been vastly different. We still have a core of defensive guys that are steady and some damn good skill posistion guys.Throw in a rejuvinated ricky and I just dont see why anyone is suprised this team finally start achieving its full potential.I see us in the nine to ten win area and would be shocked to see us lose more than 8.I guess its just like they say .. what have you done for wins lately? But ignoring the Fins as a contender and a threat to win more than 8 is not wishfull thinking .. its fairly sensible, thats probably why these writer and commentaters dont get it.

We've won 1 game. Let's see how we do in the next few before we start considering ourselves contenders. Let's see if Frerotte can come up with another big game.

The reason people said that is cause even with ricky leaving we should of been a 10-6 team still. But ricky leaving caused what we did run the ball 9 out of 10 times to be very ineffective. People knew the run was coming last year and they knew they could stop it cause it wasnt ricky. Thats the real reason we were so bad last year cause Wannstedt could never adjust in games. Im not expecting Saban to come in and be a savior first year but 9-7 is not out of the question. People just need to learn that there will be so ups and downs this season...its a whole new system and 6-10 wont be such a bad thing. :D

You never give a team credit for losing. One of the most ignorant mistakes fans and media tend to make is downplaying a victory, or especially glorifying a close defeat. That's the Razor Ruddock syndrome. Remember him? He gave Tyson two tough fights when Tyson was still considered semi-invincible. Ruddock lost both fights but somehow he was given enormous credit and projected to become a great heavyweight. I damn near had a seizure when Ruddock was installed as a 1/2 favorite over Lennox Lewis. It was solely based on phony reputation after the narrow losses to Tyson. Lewis destroyed Ruddock in two rounds.

The NFL is nothing but close games. The league is set up to insure as much balance as possible. Every losing team can point to game after game of coulda/shoulda. Bill Parcells said it best when he inherited the Cowboys after 3 straight 5-11 seasons. "When you win 5 games that's what you are, a 5 win team. You are what you are. No use pretending otherwise."

While I don't completely disagree with your overall premise, I think comparing a team sport to something like boxing makes your overall argument weaker. But you are right in contrasting the perception of the media and fans versus the actual overall quality of a boxer or football team. And that was the original point that Badfoot was making.

Also, What Bill Parcells says is always to motivate his team, not necessarily to clarify outside perception.

You and I, and all football fans, know that just one play, one yard, one inch, can turn a close loss into a close victory. Based on this fact, the overall quality of a team is not absolutely reflected in their number of wins or losses.

good teams win close games, bad teams lose close games

A little too black and white for me.

Good teams lose close games, great teams win them, and bad teams never have a chance.

I was thinking the samething..

We had some close loss's last year we werent good. But we have got all that figured out yaw and i know that bad coaching had alot to do with that. Yaw know that bad oline and qb play had alot to do with that we have addressed those problems with a better line, Saban and Frerotte. We are better those 3,7 or14 point losses could now he wins.
