What is this a-holes problem? Is this guy not the most angry, bitter POS is sports? Do us a favor Sheff, shut your ignorant mouth and just play ball. I have a buddy who worked with and signed athletes for a big shoe company when Sheff was here in L.A. and he says the guy was the biggest dick he had ever met. Rude, demanding and just an *******. Anyway, I'm sick of this guy. Anybody else?

There's no doubt the guy is a huge ***hole...

With that said, he's a hell of a baseball player and a good teammate. He's such a tremendous talent, and I respect the way he plays when he's on the field. (Playing through injuries, ect..)

I hate Shef but I do have to say that a lot of NBA players said F-off to the Olympic team last summer because they are greedy a$$es as well.

I also found these comments from Sheffield:

"We're going to bring our gold, our jewel in there, which is A-Rod. We're going to see how the chips fall this time. That's our man and we know he's our man. We're going to look out for him when he's in a situation like that. When he's in a hostile environment, we've got to make sure he's comfortable because it helps our team. (And if something like the Varitek incident happens again?) That's why I say it's going to be different. We're going to make sure that Alex is taken care of." -- 7.12 Gary Sheffield to Kevin Kernan, NY Post

At least he didn't call the Red Sox a walking disaster like he did last year because we all know how that turned out.

While I disagree with his thoughts and definitely his wording, the man has a point. If he gets hurt in this and his career is over, he's missing out on millions of dollars of salary. It's not that he needs it, but most people appreciate an extra 15 million if given the chance to earn it. This tournament should be in December or something. Love the idea, but spring training is not the right time.

I agree that the World Cup of Baseball should be in November or Decemeber and I also agree that if he gets injuried he's hurting the team that is paying him to play. However why even open his mouth? Don't say anything. It just makes him look like a jerk. I'm sure others are thinking the same thing, hell I don't want any of my team's players to play especially pitchers, but just don't say anything about it. Geez he comes off as a moron.

He's probaly just a little more honest about it than most players. Sheff is an ahole but he's not a closet ahole. Most of the guys go around signing autographs and smiling for the cameras and say the same stuff behind closed doors. I think Sheff is unquestionably an ahole, a complete ahole, but I respect the fact that hes upfront about it. He doesnt care if you like him, he wont put on the act. I really think there are alot more guys that are exactly like him but just put on the act for the cameras.

Here's the problem: who do you side with, the millionaire baseball players or the billionaire owners?

The World Baseball Classic is going to make a TON of money. I don't know if the players are going to be getting any of it, or if it all goes to MLB and other professional leagues. But the larger point is that the billionaire owners are never shy about cutting a guy loose who injures himself, whenever it may happen. If, during contract negotiations, Gary Sheffield tore his ACL saving a kid from a burning building, do you think George Steinbrenner would cut him an inch of slack for his selfless and heroic deed? No flippin' way. If Dontrelle Willis blows his arm apart pitching for the USA in the Classic, the Marlins aren't going to take it easy on him in arbitration. Or maybe they'll see it as an opportunity to force him into a long-term, lowball contract.

It's not the nicest thing in the world, but Sheff's viewpoint is not unreasonable at all. And just like basketball in the Olympics, as soon as the luster of this thing wears off, I think you'll see more players backing out. If I was Don Fehr, I'd go to MLB and say, "this program is going to expand the exposure of baseball throughout the world and make everyone a ton of money, and you'd better make sure the players involved are rewarded accordingly."

Here's the problem: no one cares about baseball then. Not only is football king, but the World Series has already taken place. Do you watch the Pro Bowl? If so, you're the only person I know who does. MLB does an all-star tour of Japan in November, and those guys would have to commit mass hari-kari to get more than a brief mention on Sportscenter. The reason they're doing it in the spring is because we're all starting to pay attention to baseball at that time. By hosting it in the spring, the audience will be much larger and more attentive. And MLB will make a ton of money (see my above post for a further rant on this).

The reason why I said it should take place in November or Decemeber is why should the World Cup take away from the players main job which is playing in the MLB. Playing in March takes those players away from their teams which could lead into problems of team chemstry because the players aren't hanging out with the team day in and day out, also the health/injury factor, a chance for fans who go to spring training to see the new free agent sign play a few games... the list goes on and on. Having the Cup played in Novemeber or Decemeber can still generate buzz and people will still watch it (you can't compare this to the Pro Bowl because the players will actually try and care). Plus it won't take away from the purpose of Spring Training in the first place.

I understand your point, and certainly, playing in November or December would be better for the players. But the sporting audience's attention is definitely elsewhere at that time. The Classic just wouldn't be as big a deal as at the start of spring training, when baseball interest is very high. There's a definite hangover that comes with playing an event right after your championship.

Again, the Pro Bowl is a great example, and I don't think you can just dismiss it. The best players in the NFL, engaging in a high-scoring shootout? I mean, that should be a big deal. But no one cares, because whatever happens after the Super Bowl is anticlimactic.

But the Pro Bowl is only one game and is considered a joke (as is all All Star games). This is a tournament with a bunch of countries going up against each other. I understand your point about a hangover from a World Series but I think people would still watch it because of the high competition, seeing some more baseball, and also seeing new players people have never seen or heard of before. I really don't think you can compare The Classic with the Pro Bowl for those aspects. I think having it in Nov. and Dec. will also generate more major league players playing in it too.

This was my point. He just tries to come off as a victim or a man who has been wronged all the time. It's tired.

At least he didn't pull out the race card. I hate it when players use that. No one cares if you white, black, brown, red, yellow, green, orange or whatever. It's about who you are as a person and how you perform on the field that matters.
