Has anyone thought of the idea of signing Jake Long and then trading him as a much more valued commodity since he'd be under contract??? Not saying we'd do it but I think it'dbe a great idea....maybe squeeze a couple extra picks out of St. Louis and still get Chris Long or Gholston or Dorsey or whoever. Any thoughts????

I have a thought but It would be censored

Let me just add that this scenerio will not take place

This would be an impossible move as you would accelerate his approx $30 million signing bonus into this cap year.

You don't sign a player and trade him....you would select a player and trade him....and it isn't going to happen.

rookies don't get their guaranteed money in a signing bonus

they get guaranteed base salaries and roster bonuses

As a dominant tackle, Jake Long is probably as good as they come, out of college...He was even rated better than Joe Thomas last year, and we have a clean shot at aquiring his services, which will hopefully upgrade our offensive line for many years...Why even think about trading that? How many chances to get elite talent will we get? I`d rather have Jake, than 3 second tier linemen, who will never open holes or protect our qb the way a franchise LT would. I know onlytime will tell how good he willl be, but we just cannot pass on this big of a chance to upgrade our line. Everybody (TE, RB, FB,QB,WR,D) will benefit from this move.

I know all the hype surrounding J Long but I also know what it's going to take to rebuild this franchise and the more picks we can get the better. I'd take a high first and an extra second and more for long if the offer presented itself

not signing and trading him would be worthless......having signed sealed and delivered, especially at the less-than-last-year price which is being rumored, would bring back a lot of the value which is lost because of the financial commitmnet involved with the pick.

I'm not saying it is even remotely probable......but it would be a GREAT situation for us, and for the team that traded up for the #1 pick and doesn't have to worry about any nasty negotiations.

I would bet almost anything...that Condon would have a no trade clause in the contract...before J. Long would sign anything. What nasty negotiations? If J. Long is signed...the negotiations are already done...thats was the reason why Wayne said that he wanted the pick signed BEFORE the draft. It won't happen that way....either the Dolphins will trade...outright...or they will sign the player they really want...J. Long.

that would be first....I can't ever recall hearing that an NFL player had a no trade clause....please correct me if I'm wrong. So, unless Condon were expecting this type of unprecedented move, why would he ask for an unprecedented term?

the nasty negotiations would be for a team that acquired the top pick, but didn't have the top pick signed (see J.Russell last year).....this is exactly why I said that the team trading up would be able to AVOID it...since he already signed a deal with Miami.

trading outright would be the cleanest for Miami....but no one wants to do it. change the scenario slightly by signing the guy to a club-friendly contract beforehand, and it may help the process.

I don't think so.

Stupidest idea ever ... because that would immediately go against our cap!

One main reason the Bengals can just up and trade Ocho Cinco is because his cap it would be too great, just like it would be to trade Jake.

Long's been a member of the team for 10 minutes and some maroon wants to trade him already.

If you watched the presser, Sparano is in love with Jake.

Jake's our boy. End of discussion!

In defense of the OP, check the time stamp on his post. He wrote it well before today's news broke.
