since there might not be a cap in the next couple years, would it be smart to sign all our young players to longer deals? If we get Brees this offseason, we'd probably payin him alot less than we would if we got him if there wasnt a cap.

It's going to be tough to sign anybody long term because bonuses can only be prorated over 4 years. A player would have to be an idiot to sign a 7 year contract when it only means they get a $6 million signing bonus instead of the $12 million they would have gotten before.

^ exactly. Besides, along with signing bonuses and signing long term contracts, all the incentives would eventually pile on top of one another therefore putting them in more cap trouble than they are already in. So if there is a cap, you realistically can only pay a certain amount of people if everyone is on a long term deal.

What about just giving them K's with huge payouts this year and then small the next 4-5 years so when the cap comes back we will be paying our good players almost nothing.

Not too many guys get 7 year contracts.

Here is the catch...only players that have been in the league 6 years, can become free agents during that cap free 2007. That hurts some of the younger guys.

Real easy...sign Brees and pay him lets say 4 million this year...with the promise that if the NFL goes uncapped that his salary can explode. Now if there is a agreement, then we have the room to offer him more. Just get Brees here however, whatever it takes...promise him the moon.
