YES I know we have a glaring hole at the moment at ILB, but getting a free agent LB would be a mistake. Yes I know there are some quality guys that MAY hit free agency such as Dansby and Scott, but I don't know why people think Dansby wont be resigned. The guy is a huge asset to AZ (and they know it if we do) and with all the cap room they have (I think 40+ million) there is no reason to think they wont get him back. They will offer him atleast what anyone else is willing to offer with the amount of money they have. As far as someone like Bart Scott; the guy will be in his 8th season next year so it goes against "getting younger."
The biggest reason I don't think we should get a LB in free agency is that Parcell's enitre forte is developing linebackers. He is better at it than anyone else. He has done it his whole career and he is DAMN good at it.

If we were to throw a lot of money at a top notch free agents that MAY be availible I'd say say Nnamdi Asomugha would be the only one really worth it. Shut down corners are rare find in the NFL with all the rules made to favor offenses these days. Plus as a DB can play at a high level for a longer period of time because DBs dont get much wear and tear (he has only missed 3 games in 7 years). He is as good as it gets (as I'm sure everyone feels), but the guy is gonna cost 9.5 to 10.5+ million a year (FYI...he made 9.7 million in 2008). And in residual worth imagine how much it will help our WRs practicing everyday against the best in the business.

FA is usually a waste of money

teams that can replenish through the draft(ie Pittsburg) are fortunate

Pittsburg isn't even afraid to let their older players go

They saw talent in thier backups and it was getting time to let Porter go. Thier defense has actually been higher rated without Porter, 2 years in a row best defense in football they were 9th in Porter's last year. You also cannot argue that you would rather have Harrison and Woodly over Porter at this point.

Fa is a good place to get role players, but shelling out huge contracts for someone who was already turned down by another team is ris kay

the only LB I really want in FA is Karlos Dansby because he can do anything; drop into coverage, blitz, shed blocks, tackle in space.

I think we go after him because Tuna wanted him in that draft, but was offered a nice deal to move down, and Dansby was taken with the first pick in the second round. That draft was not Tuna's best.

Pitt has had a lot of misses though in the draft as well. Yeah they were able to let guys like Joey Porter, Clark Haggins, and Jason Gildon walk because of LaMarr Woodley, Lawrence Timmons, and James Harrison (though Gildon is way before either of those 3), while also letting Chad Scott, and Dwyane Washington walking for guys like Troy Polamalu and Ike Taylor. But for every Woodley, Taylor, and Polamalu Pitt has had an Alonzo Jackson, Ricardo Coughlough, and Anthony Smith.

Pitt is lucky enough though to hit more with their first rounders (Big Ben, Holmes, Polamalu, Miller) and find some gems later rounds and UDFA (Willie Parker, Nate Washington, Willie Colon, James Harrison) while adding FAs that aren't highly sought after (Ryan Clark, James Farrior, Justin Hartwig, Keyaron Fox)

I checked it out just for the heck of it, but man u were right on...that was a terrible draft for Dallas in 2004. Parcells missed on a lot of picks

Parcells like most Gm's will miss alot but you definately have to have some hits which he has

Of couse...im just sayin he had a bad year...that doesnt mean hes not a GREAT GM...dont get me wrong

Dansby's the only guy I want to shell out the cash for this year LB-wise. Maybe Bart Scott too, but I think Dansby would be an awesome get.

I would agree with you. However, where we're picking, we wont get a better player than Karlos Dansby. If we are really building this team from the inside out, with the defensive line looking solid (though I still believe Canty will potentially replace Vonnie), then the Mike LB spot and the SOLB spot are the next areas to upgrade.

why sign Canty when we can slide Merling over. I still think Dansby will be an ouside backer whereever he goes.

I dont see why he couldnt play inside. 4-3 OLBs move to 3-4 ILB all the time.

As for Canty, cant really argue with your point, I just have a hunch. We shall see.

Well I can think of 2 "possible" reasons to sign Canty depending on what the FO's is really thinking/seeing.

1) IF, and I think it's a big IF, they are actually considering Merling for a SOLB position.

2) If they feel like Canty is just better than Merling and want to develop Merling some more.
