i dont know where i heard this, but for some reason i was under the impression that the league allots a certain amount of cap room to teams in order to sign their draft picks. this may in fact be totally false, because like i said, i cant remember where i heard it, but i was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this? because i have heard some people on this board saying that we're running out of cap room with which to sign our draft picks. thanks.

thats a good question. i think teams allot so much money but im pretty sure im wrong.

It's true. Teams are alloted a salary cap within a salary cap for draft picks. They won't announce the numbers for a week or 2 still. Miami's will be one of the smallest in the league as the team only has to fit a 1st/3rd/4th and 3 7th's into it. Miami also has the flexibility of being at pick #16 which allows the team to sign their guy to a 6 year deal whereas at pick #17 they would have only been allowed to sign their guy to a 5 year deal (1-16 6 years, 17-32 5 years).

Doesn't another "bundle" of cap space come along at draft time? Shoot. Maybe teams do have to budget before the draft. Or, maybe we are carrying some guys who will be let go when we draft people att heir position and that makes them not count aginst our cap? Help.

Nice info. It's rated on your picks.

Did not know this.

No, we get alloted no more money. The "cap within a cap" rookie money comes from the regular cap. It simply restricts how much rookies can make. We are about $8 mil under right now according to the cap page, our rookie pool will be likely around $3mil or so. We will keep $1 mil
for "emergencies" during the season, which gives us $4 mil or so to spend.

I hope this is right! :D

Did the rookie cap change at all with the new CBA? It's been my understanding most of the holdouts are over other monies not the actual signing bonus.

if we got only 4 mill to use this year how are we going to get arringotn? i think he'll want more than 4 mill

We don't get allocated any additional CAP space ... the draft pool comes from your picks and fits under the established CAP ...

Thus, every team must fence off usually between 3-5 MIL of their CAP for the draft picks.

My understanding is that each team must have enough cap space at the time of the draft based on the rookie salary base ($275,000) X the # of draft picks they have. When the team starts signing these picks and signing bonuses, incentives etc are equated than the team must ensure that the signings are still under the salary cap (Just like FA). Teams will usually budget about $4-5 million for rookie signings.

TEAMS must be sure to save money for the picks.....there is no LEAGUE involved

If you sign someone for 5 years with a $10,000,000 signing bonus and then give him a minimum contract for the first year of say $500,000, your cap hit the first year is $2,500,000. 1/5 of the signing bonus and this year's salary. That's how it happens.

Which is a big reason why the owners were at each other's throats during the CBA negotiations, since owners like Dan Snyder can more readily afford the big multi-million dollar signing bonuses than someone like Ralph Wilson.

BTW, under salary cap rules if a team does not have the alloted amount to sign rookies by the start of the draft they cannot draft until they do. This has never happened, but I recall some team came very close a few years back.
