Hey guys. How are all of you doing today? Once again, it's my weekly column. We are three days removed from our game at Carolina. In some ways, it was a disaster. In some ways, it was a spectacle. Unfortunately, I can only give you a short column this time so I'll get to the juiciest details.

The Good News

Our defense, for the most part, was very good. Great even. Jake Delhomme only completed six passes for 58 yards and no touchdowns. Matt Roth and Jason Taylor grabbed our lone two sacks in the game. Our secondary, from bottom to top, improved dramtically, forcing Kasay to kick from beyond 40 yards on all of his kicks except one.

Our passing game was great, with Peelle and Welker showing great concentration after getting tattooed after making the receptions. Chris Chambers would of had two touchdown passes had it not been for interference on his part (We all know he did it. He wasn't robbed). Derek Hagan also caught a pass for a first down. Geralds Riggs Jr. showed some hands coming out of the backfield.

Daunte scrambled for the first time in action, running for about eight yards. So far, I'm really regretting not getting the name of Daunte's surgeon. I might want to look him up in a few years.

Joey looked solid. And so did Cleo Lemon, all things considered.

And what do you know? Ronnie Brown can pass.

The Bad News

The offensive line was pretty much having problems. Watching Ronnie Brown trying to find a hole to go through that night was like watching someone trying to find a needle in a haystack. He was only able to pull of one good one. I'm not going to outright blame Benny Anderson. All of them should of done better. But right now, I wish Seth McKinney and Joe Toledo wasn't injured.

Our special teams messed up in allowing the only touchdown by Carolina.

My thoughts

Last year, our secondary was our primary weakness. This year, in my opinion, it is the offensive line. We have one last game against the rams. Jimmy Kennedy and La'Roi Glover are no slouches. They should also be a test for our offensive line.

Quote of the week

"I walked up to Chris Gamble and I told him, 'Thank you. If he hadn't hit me like that, I probably wouldn't be here right now. I was very excited to come back to the city of Charlotte and I was glad to go out and show people it really isn't an issue."

-Daunte Culpepper

Just to add to the good, the Panthers didn't pick up a first down until 3:33 remained in the half. That came on a pass vs. Eddie Jackson, who will be our 5th CB.

And for all their woes in the run game, the offensive line actually did a pretty good job in pass protection. Vernon Carey had a very good game, making Julius Peppers virtually invisible.

The daunte qoute is just a tad weird, but in a good way. Im glad we have a Q.B. that REALLY wants to be here.

thanks for the great read.i dont think the offensive line is our primary weakness this year.carolina is a hell of a defense especially their defensive line.i think our secondary is still our primary weakness.we made a huge improvement this game compared to the last two games.delhomme didnt do well but he didnt have steve smith.

Also, their lone TD was not against our starting ST unit. Saban was resting players while experimenting with others.

Plus, our starting Defense again did not allow a TD.

im not sure what the hell is up with the o-line. imo,we only have one weak link at RG.
the thing is that our oline was mplaying so well the past couple weeks and now they get destroyed.i hope they fix the problem.if we cant run the ball we are in trouble.

I think the PI calls against CC and Keyshawn were both incredibly ticky tack, while Hagen's first down catch was a flagrant offsive PI penalty that went uncalled. Looks like we're in for another year of old decrepid guys trying to keep up with the game.

The problem with the O-line is they have only had three games to play as a unit. It takes time to gel.

O-line is a position that everyone of the five lineman need to be on the same page. You have to have the confidence that the guy beside you is going to do his job and you don't have to cover for him while trying to block your guy.

Also some of them are new and still learning the blocking schemes. It makes a huge difference when you know the plays like the back of your hand and are not phased by any of the blitzes and stunts that the defense throws at you.

I played guard in college and played with the same center and tackle for three years. We all excelled because we could audible our blocking schemes at the line depending on the way the defense lined up and we each did our job without being confused or wonderding if the guy beside you would pick up on the adjustment.

The mental preparation of the game especially at O-line is just as important, if not more important than phyical abilities.

Hopefully this O-line will stay together and play as a unit and they will gel and become dominating for years to come! If they keep changing players in and out each year it will be more of the same, starting from square one with inconsistent play.

Give them a few more games together, they should get better and allow Ronnie to bust some HUGE plays! :dolphins:

i agree with my man owenvas, they need to work together, if they can stay healthy and play together for another month then we should see things start to click, houck has been impressive so far and i think he can work with these guys and produce.....at least thats what i'm hopin' for

One thing to keep in mind guys, last year at this time, I don't recall our running game doing any better. It was pretty anemic. Remember all the Ronnie Browns a bust post?

Then comes opening day and the line showed marked improvement.

No cause for alarm just yet. keep your chin up.

The other thing is preperation. I dont think the Oline can prepare for these teams ina preseason environment when they are already working on stuff in practice for Pittsburgh. Time to gel is obvious and when you switch guys around and guys get hurt, you obviously lose that and then you go up against the best in the league. I think that is a good thing.
