Ill start off by saying that I love our guys up front on defense. Obviously, our D is the best part of our team, so before you categorize me as a JT and ZT basher or whatever other things people will reply with, just keep in mind that I have always supported the D.

That being said, WAY too much emphaiss is being put on the offense as the cause of our 1-4 record. This needs to change, sure the offense has been AWFUL, but this defense has collapsed in crucial moments quite a bit.

Example: There must be a million threads saying "Harrington sucks, his two INTS led to scores!". Last time I checked, having your pass intercepted didnt give the other team 14 points. There was a defense that needed to get out on the field after those interceptions and they were NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. New England made it look easy and marched right down the field. If we would have held them to 3 points or less on just one of those drives, think of the difference that would have made.

Our secondary is bad, we all know that, but what's worst is the entire defense on third down. It seems as though they just burn out and give up a big play, or cause some ridiculous penalty, or simply sit in their zones and are slow to the football. It actually works against us that we're so good on first and second down defensively because we just fold on third down and so all that ends up happening is we stay on the field for three downs before the other team gets a first down and we have to do it all over again, this is why we've seen the defensive play diminish as the game gets down to the closing moments, these guys ware themselves out!

Sure, we've also seen greatness from our D, including that critical stop when Brady and company had been driving and completing first down after first down, only to have to punt. At times we also get great pressure on the QB.

Somebody said it best a few weeks ago when they said that some players hold "tenure" if you will and the fans here let things slip with them. That's how I feel about our defense, we praise them and when they fold we find some way to blame the offense. The truth is this defense has put us in horrible positions, weather it be a Will Allen pass interference in the red zone or a completely ineffective blitz, we don't seem to be as great as we sometimes make it out to be. It's expected that new quarterbacks will attract more negative posts than our well known, veteran defense, but this sort of analysis will hurt our team.

Yes, the defense needs to share in a bit of the blame. They've made journeymen QB's look better than they are, and have problems on 3rd down. But the one thing that really bothers me about this defense is it's inability to make a big play or come up with a turnover.

As we've seen time and time again, turnovers often lead to points. But outside of the Texans game, this team has not helped out an offense in dire need of it by causing turnovers or making big plays.

Sorry but an offense is supposed to pick up first downs, sustain a drive and score points.

A defense is supposed to stop the opposing offense.

If turnovers happen that does help the offens yes.

But this offense has to help itself. That is the objective of the game.

Our defense is always on the field.

I blame this horrid start on the offense. Period!

I think your right on. The D never comes up with the key stop. Always gets pass interference calls on them, When was the last time they scored a TD off a turnover. They keep the score close is all you can say. But then again other teams play conservative because they know if they don't make a big mistake we will. ( also weve played the steelers with a back up there only win they have is against us,Titans no wins, Texans 1 win against us, so as you see we haven't even played a good offense. This D- would be ok if we had Cincy or the colts offense but we don't.

We average 12.2 points per game and you single out the D for not scoring TD's.
This is ludicrious!

We scored 15 points against the Houston freaking Texans!

My Thoughts on the Defense

The defensive line has played well. Vonnie Holiday is noticeably improved from last year. This is a contract year, and he has stepped up.

Spragan played great in Game 5. 1 solo tackle in each of Games 2,3, and 4 was bad.

Our corners are better than our safeties. Goodman and Daniels are better than W Allen.

Our safeties don't defend passes, they just tackle after the catch. Bell is the only exception... and he's not starting. He had 2 passes defended in game 5.

***************
Dom Capers is the 3-4 specialist... however, we only have 2 linebackers (Thomas and Crowder)... making the 3-4 defense pointless. We will have to see if Spragan improves. I'm not too fond of using Jason Taylor as the 4th linebacker. Too bad we didn't keep Seau.

***************
The defense is still pretty good... but not great like it used to be. 2 years ago, our secondary was ranked #1 in the league... too bad it was dismantled.

Sorry but our defense has allowed the other team to less than 17 points a game.

NE - 17 pts off turnovers
Pitt - 10 pts off turnovers
Bills - 10 pts off turnovers

Offense and special teams need to step up. I still don't understand how people can blame a defense that keeps their team in the game the whole time.

Do you think the Ravens D was at fault for last nights loss to the Broncos? They collapsed late game. I wonder how many people out there think it is not the offenses fault and it is the Ds fault for losign that game.

Yes, by all means lets complain about our #5 ranked defense.

The defense shares some blame in much the same way the moon helps provide light to the earth.

...the offense being the sun.

I Think It Is Fair To Point Out That They Do Have Trouble Getting Off The Field On 3rd Downs. However The Point About Not Getting Turnovers Is Invalid Because First Off They Got A Huge One At The 1 Yard Line In The Pitt Game And Couldn't Pick Up A 3rd And 2 With 6 Minutes To Go, They Got 2 In The Houston Game, One Of Which Started The Second Half And The Offense Only Came Aaway With Three Points, And Came Up With A Huge Turnover Against New England On A Punt Return And Proceeded To Go 3 And Out. The Reason The Turnovers Go Unoticed Is Because The Offense Does Very Little With Them. They Get Turnovers They Just Don't Get The Big Ones That Get Returned For Td's Or Set Up Super Short Fields.

I agree that the defense played poorly the first 4 weeks, but I was really impressed with their play last Sunday. They played at a level that, had they done so in the first 4 weeks, I think our record would be 4-1.
Don't forget that they were playing a team with the best Qb in the league and one that boasted a top 5 running game.
To blame the defense for this loss is just unfair. I'm sure if you asked Bellichek, Brady or any of the other players on the Pats Offense, they would all agree that Miami's D was the best one they have faced this year.

I like your sarcasm there:wink: ...seriously, the defense is not helping us when we need them BUT they are giving us opportunities to win games... the D continues to get better, but unfortunately the O continues to put them in bad positions... I think next year is when we see the most improvement on D, especially if we add a pass rushing linebacker on the outside...lets hope the O starts to click before the D gets sick of spending too much time on the field...

You do understand that the march down the field after those turnovers was less than 35 yards for them right?? How can you blame the defense for the offenses mistakes??? You can't expect to commit two crucial errors on one of the best teams in the league and come out with 0 points. That's exactlty why they are one of the best teams in the league. I think you have lowered yourself down unfortunately to our standards of offense cause we can't score more than 3 points after turnovers - and that's if we are having a hell of a drive!!! Our defense is ranked number #5 in the NFL right now, I think we should give them a break, don't you??? It's one of the bright spots on this team, so let's praise them instead.

Note: The pass interference call on Will Allen happens to every team - and he was trying to make a play for the ball. That call could've gone either way in my opinion.

Please the defense is the only reason we've been in any of the games. Our defense is more than good enough to win. The offense is the catalyst to our demise. Collectively we suck, it's as simple as that.

Our defense has NOT kept us in games. From the get go in Pittsburgh they have been dissapointing. They have consistently been bad on third down, which means nothing else matters because third down is key, it doesnt matter what they do on first and second because they blow it on third. We have had really solid moments on defense, but the truth is they start to burn out late in the game because of the fact they can't get off the field, so by the end of the game, when it matters the most they are completely burned out. We had a chance on sunday even when we missed that 50 yarder and our defense couldnt make the stop and so we didnt even get the ball back. WEAK
