Active Roster
Now I'm not going to pretend the last several years of Shula were great; he messed up as well. He never got Marino a decent running game or defense. But he knew how to take talent and make the most of it. In the 70's, he had talented runners, so the ran the ball. In the 80's, he had Marino, so he threw it.
Next come JJ. He loved defense and speed on defense. He knew our team desperately needed defense and picked some good defenders, but couldn't help the offense. The defense and Marino's arm took them to the playoffs, but they couldn't go any further
Dave comes next riding on JJ's coat-tails and uses his defense and a good running game to mask other deficiencies. Playoffs again, but no further. As JJ's players decline, so does Dave's coaching skills and he is gone.
My next wave of optimism came with Saban. I really expected alot and ended up severely disappointed. He appeared to be improving the team, but proved he couldn't hack it at the NFL level.
Can I forget the Cameron era? When we chose him as a coach, I said "Huh". I saw no improvements on the team, period.
The next wave of hope comes with Parcells/Sporano/Ireland. Everywhere Bill had been, he had rebuilt franchises, exactly what we needed. He preached the philosophy of a tough, physical team. This he seemed to do, but did not find enough playmakers. Everyone got on his case for this and he backed out, failing in his final NFL stop.
Philbin joins Ireland and the focus shifts to up-tempo, fast-paced offense. Linemen are forgotten and playmakers are brought in. Gone is Long; in is Wallace-money spent in this direction. We saw that Parcells might have had something when he wanted linemen, because Tannehill had people to throw to, but no time to do it.
Now Hickey is in. Will things improve? Will he make the moves necessary to bring this organization from the depths? He signs questionable players mostly due to injuries. If they stay healthy, it should be a good season, but if either goes down, our depth is lacking. Now he goes back to Parcell's strategy in building the line again, bypassing playmakers.
We desperately need someone who knows what they are doing. Confidence is at a real low now. I guess we may be making a clean sweep at the end of this year.
