Game in, game out, Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie draw the most headlines in the Jets’ secondary, but cornerback Buster Skrine will draw the high profile assignment of stopping Jarvis Landry, Miami’s top slot target, on Sunday.

“I’ll be ready for it,” Skrine said. “I’m just ready for the challenge. You always like to go against the best receiver.”

This week’s task will be to keep second-year star Landry from catching passes from quarterback Ryan Tannehill. At 5-foot-11, 202 pounds, Landry creates space with his disciplined route running. Once a college teammate of Giants wideout Odell Beckham Jr., Landry is part of the 2014 draft class that demanded immediate attention last season. He is well known to the league now, and particularly to Jets defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers, who coached the defensive line in Miami last season. Rodgers counts Skrine as a formidable, physical foe for Landry.

“(Landry) is mentally tough,” Jets coach Todd Bowles said. “You know he’s never going to back down.”

All eyes will be on Landry, who runs out of the slot position 73.8% of the time, according to ProFootballFocus.com. Bowles compares him to Ravens receiver Steve Smith, both for his size and his ability to gain separation. Landry has yet to score a touchdown this season, but Tannehill found him for a two-point conversion last week. He can hurt teams in other ways on special teams, too. He helped Miami finish off Washington in the season opener when he returned a punt 69 yards for a game-winning touchdown.

“He’s a fighter,” Skrine said. “I respect his game. He’s real crafty.”
.

“They broke the JUGS machine at LSU because they used it too much,” said 49ers wide receivers coach Adam Henry.

Rodgers spent plenty of time watching Tannehill in Miami, too. Though Landry is the favorite receiver for the Dolphins, Rodgers does not believe that Tannehill will shy from trying any and all defensive backs, including Revis.

While others tend to stay away, Rodgers believes Revis and Cromartie will need to be just as alert as Skrine when the game kicks off.

“Ryan’s a very confident quarterback,” Rodgers said. “He’s very competitive. I don’t think he’s shying away from anybody.”

Jets CB Buster Skrine expects to square off with Jarvis Landry in Sunday's game.
In other words, if the Jets are planning on having Darrelle Revis shadow Landry, they haven't told Skrine. "I’ll be ready for it," Skrine said. "You always like to go against the best receiver." Skrine is a fine corner in his own right, but it's good news for Landry's WR2 prospects.

Skrine? What happened to Revis shadowing your best WR?

I would attack those LB's with Cameron too. I would like to see Harris or Couples run with Cameron.

i say go after cromartie...and do it with parker

I like that plan too. Cromartie is a PI waiting to happen.

Unless, Parker can beat him on the deep ball i don't see it. Cromartie for the most part plays the short stuff pretty well and you better be careful throwing the ball there.

Skrine has been great for us so far, Cro is definitely the guy to attack but Landry is really good at what he does, he'll get his recs. can't let those shorter passes turn into longer gains.

cros lazy he has great physical tools though which means you put some average physical ability guy across from him he can make up for it...you put a legit tools talent and i think there's plays to be made there...of course if we can't run the ball the more you go there the more likely he will get one but i'm not going after revis...

i'm going after those 2 ilbs with our running backs and i'm going after cro and if the jets play skrine 1 on 1 with no help on landry i'm going after it too but skrine is a very solid nickle...will be interesting to see how much blitzing the jets do...i know they are very blitz heavy...i better see some site adjustments from the blitz side receiving options...and if we get behind the scoreboard they can really dial up some exotic blitzes...i'm sure they will double landry on 3rd down or in the red zone

anyways the ball will go where the coverage dictates it should anyways...but if miami doesnt try to get the rbs 1 on 1 in space with the ilbs by scheme lazors a clown

wherever revis is stay away from it...unless you want to pay

im kind of shocked with the ability of Landry, and consistency, they arent putting Revis on him (nothing against Skrine who is playing quite well). but thats for now too.

Hi Todd Bowles, miss you!!!

otherwise Parker needs to be out there heavily, many snaps... lets go!!! Challenge the Jets with him, Matthews and Landry. If we actually can block, might be a fun game to watch through the air.... challenge both sides!!!

Parker should have a break out game. If this staff doesn't unleash him this game it's a huge mistake. You can see this kid is ready for the show!

Its going to be a good match up, I love how aggressive Skrine is and he is a better tackler than I thought, very physical guy and with Landry style I can see Skrine pick up a few pass interference penalties and if the rush on RT is strong i can see Skrine getting a pick or two.....but the game will be won on the line of scrimmage, if the Fins can't keep, Wilkerson and Douzable out of the backfield its going to be a long day....Cro is dangerous when you attack him to much, he the type of guy you hit then leave alone, he's a very crafty vet who likes to take chances and if you throw to much to his side he'll make you pay.....I'll take my chances with Skrine, only because you might get a flag or two....It amazes me that this kid wan a FA and the fins didn't offer him a contract.....

Asking a lot against probably the best secondary in the NFL.....

I agree, the one weakness that Jet defense has is speed at LB, Miller must have a big game running and passing.....he has got to win the 1 on 1 matchup coming out the backfield....I don't expect the fins to have a big game passing to the wide outs against this secondary, they will have limited success the key is to move the ball with the backs, Gray and Miller.....if screens, draws, check downs and off tackle runs are successful then we can hit a pass here and there...the OL has to come up big, if not it will be a long day.....
