Game in, game out, Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie draw the most headlines in the Jets’ secondary, but cornerback Buster Skrine will draw the high profile assignment of stopping Jarvis Landry, Miami’s top slot target, on Sunday.
“I’ll be ready for it,” Skrine said. “I’m just ready for the challenge. You always like to go against the best receiver.”
This week’s task will be to keep second-year star Landry from catching passes from quarterback Ryan Tannehill. At 5-foot-11, 202 pounds, Landry creates space with his disciplined route running. Once a college teammate of Giants wideout Odell Beckham Jr., Landry is part of the 2014 draft class that demanded immediate attention last season. He is well known to the league now, and particularly to Jets defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers, who coached the defensive line in Miami last season. Rodgers counts Skrine as a formidable, physical foe for Landry.
“(Landry) is mentally tough,” Jets coach Todd Bowles said. “You know he’s never going to back down.”
All eyes will be on Landry, who runs out of the slot position 73.8% of the time, according to ProFootballFocus.com. Bowles compares him to Ravens receiver Steve Smith, both for his size and his ability to gain separation. Landry has yet to score a touchdown this season, but Tannehill found him for a two-point conversion last week. He can hurt teams in other ways on special teams, too. He helped Miami finish off Washington in the season opener when he returned a punt 69 yards for a game-winning touchdown.
“He’s a fighter,” Skrine said. “I respect his game. He’s real crafty.”
.
“They broke the JUGS machine at LSU because they used it too much,” said 49ers wide receivers coach Adam Henry.
Rodgers spent plenty of time watching Tannehill in Miami, too. Though Landry is the favorite receiver for the Dolphins, Rodgers does not believe that Tannehill will shy from trying any and all defensive backs, including Revis.
While others tend to stay away, Rodgers believes Revis and Cromartie will need to be just as alert as Skrine when the game kicks off.
“Ryan’s a very confident quarterback,” Rodgers said. “He’s very competitive. I don’t think he’s shying away from anybody.”

Jets CB Buster Skrine expects to square off with Jarvis Landry in Sunday's game.
In other words, if the Jets are planning on having Darrelle Revis shadow Landry, they haven't told Skrine. "I’ll be ready for it," Skrine said. "You always like to go against the best receiver." Skrine is a fine corner in his own right, but it's good news for Landry's WR2 prospects.
