By the end of Dick Anderson's first season with the Dolphins in 1968, the former safety had intercepted eight passes on his way to earning Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.
''I was fortunate because I started off with a pretty good bang,'' said Anderson, 60, arguably the best safety in team history.
That's the way some stars launch their NFL careers, a plunge toward greatness typically achieved only by the game's best. Rookie Jason Allen, the Dolphins' newest safety, just hopes it is not the only way.
These days, seated in the most secluded corner of the Dolphins locker room, Allen knows he has yet to find that early glimpse of stardom. He spends his weekdays on the scout team, imitating players from the upcoming opponent.
He spends his Sundays on special teams, not exactly the place for a first-round pick.
