Winning is a Habit
I have to say I am very impressed with a lot of the acquisitions our FO made this offseason, the draft in paticular. Sean Smith seems to be the real deal. His praise in practice wasn't just talk, he backed it up with his play on the field.
Pat White looked ok last night. He's got the moves, but the kid needs to learn to slide. You can't expect to take that many hits as a QB in the NFL. Overall, his play was solid. He wasn't lights out, but he wasn't bad either. The one INT he threw was not his fault. It should have been caught. I just wish we could have seen a little more of him, but that will come in later preseason games. He's still got a lot to learn, but he looks good so far.
Jake Grove was a mixed bag last night. He struggled against big John Henderson, but a lot of other centers do as well. He looked a little better after the first quarter, and hopefully he improves. A lot of our run success will hinge on how well our interior guys can run block.
Vontae Davis showed he was a rookie last night. He had a couple of knucklehead penalties and got burned maybe once or twice, but the guy can play. Hopefully these are things he can refine in practice.
Jason Taylor, what can I say. It was nice to see him in a Phins uniform again. The first team D was solid. They will be a top 5 defense in this league, at least IMO. The first team D got pressure on the QB and gave nothing up in the rushing game.
Gibril Wilson was a great acquisition. He is a leader and exactly what our young secondary needs. After Vontae's bonehead penalty on the punt, he grab his jersey and got in his face. Exactly what a veteran needs to do to a rook. He was solid out there and he will be a great addition this year.
Eric Green was bad. He will have to do a lot of good things to make this team. He was picked on the whole time he was in the game. Hopefully the guy can turn things around, but things look grim for him. Even Jason Allen had at least once nice play on a pass deflection.
Patrick Turner and Brian Hartline both caught a few passes. Turner is big and Henne looked for him a lot in the third quarter. Hartline caught a bullet from Henne on a nice deep out route. Overall the two looked ok, for first game rookies. I do expect more out of them as they progress, but so far they get a good grade.
Tony McDaniel looks like a good pickup as a trade. He is big and has some good skills as a pass rusher. He was getting some good pressure lat in the game and his height allows him to force QBs to change their throws. He should make the roster and will contribute as a solid backup.
Cameron Wake. The guy has some great athletic skills. He has everything a great pass rusher needs. He has strength, speed, and a great motor. He blew by the RT on one play by dipping his right shoulder and getting on the edge. He hit the QB right in the middle of his throw and this resulted in an errant pass to the flats. He still needs some work, but this guy does belong in the NFL.
Overall, the good outweighs the bad by a lot. I think this FO added more talent to our team and we desperately needed it. On another note, an Ernest Wiliford sighting last night. Who knew the guy could catch? Let alone catch a pass for a TD. Anyway, saw a lot of good things last night and we still have a lot of things that need work, but we took a step in the right direction last night.
