So Many Reasons That It Has Gotten This Bad

I think some people here have very short memory when it comes to our drafts. Anyone remember Spiellman, Wannstendt, Saban, or Cameron's drafts? At least we have gotten some serviceable players out of Ireland. The rest of those guys continued to miss on our first and second round picks, when we had any!

You know its very telling that not only were some of these guys busts for us but, alot of them are not even in the league anymore at all.

2005: Ronnie Brown, Matt Roth, Channing Crowder, Travis Daniels, Anthony Alabi, Kevin Vickerson

2006: Jason Allen, Derek Hagan, Fred Evans, Rodrique Wright, Devin Aromashodu

2007: Ted Ginn, Jr., John Beck, Samson Satele, Lorenzo Booker, Paul Soliai, Reagan Mauia, Drew Mormino, Kelvin Smith, Brandon Fields, Abraham Wright

2008: Jake Long, Chad Henne, Kendall Langford, Shawn Murphy, Jalen Parmalee, Donald Thomas, Lex Hilliard, Lionel Dotson

2009: Vontae Davis, Pat White, Sean Smith, Patrick Turner, Brian Hartline, John Nalbone, Chris Clemons, Andrew Gardner, J.D. Folsom

2010: Jared Odrick, Koa Misi, John Jerry, A.J. Edds, Nolan Carroll, Reshad Jones, Chris McCoy, Austin Spitler

2011: Mike Pouncey, Daniel Thomas, Edmund Gates, Charles Clay, Frank Kearse, Jimmy Wilson

52 picks over 7 drafts.

Very early signs from Pouncey & Daniel Thomas are acceptable. Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, & Brian Hartline have made some contributions. Jake Long, Paul Soliai, and Kendall Langford are solid.

8 players that you would arguably want on your team if you were starting one today. 8 players. And we can't even say for sure that Davis, Smith, Hartline, Pouncey, or Daniel Thomas truly qualify. The jury is still out. Benefit of the doubt given, 8 players in 7 years.

Over the same period, here are few names from the Green Bay Packers drafts - and keep in mind, the Packers were typically drafting lower than the Dolphins.

Aaron Rodgers, Nick Collins, A.J. Hawk, Greg Jennings, Daryn Colledge, James Jones, Des Bishop, Mason Crosby, Jordy Nelson, Jermichael Finley, Josh Sitton, B.J. Raji, Clay Matthews, Bryan Bulaga, James Starks, Morgan Burnett, Derek Sherrod, Randall Cobb.

That's an All-Pro QB, 3 big-time WRs, starting RB, 3 starting LBs, a top safety, top defensive lineman, great kicker, top TE, and a few starting offensive linemen. Unbelievable.

First, "made some contributions"?? Brian Hartline is a legit WR. The only other receiver that puts in the effort on every play like him is Bess.
Most of the people on your list that are being used to support your statements were late round picks. The last few years have brought some talent here and anyone that doesn't see that, frankly I don't think is being honestly objective.

Come on people!!!!! Talent on the field is NOT our problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That implies that the Fins have great players but a bad coach. Change the coach and everything is alright. Guys, that is wishful thinking as it is easier switching a coach than the players. The same guys calling for Sparanos head called for Camerons, Wannstedts head etc. They sucked as coaches, no doubt about it. But changing a coach will not help if your team is mediocre.
What worries me most is that Ireland will stay after all due to his connection to the awful I-ruined-the -Chiefs-let-me -do-the-same-here Peterson. It is true that he wanted Ryan instead of Long and was against Pat White. But since he is calling the shots the Fins traded away two 2nd rounders for an overrated Marshall, drafted ANOTHER D-liner, an average run.-stop-LB in Misi, a fat John Jerry who can't pull, can't pass block, a 4th rd LB who was sent home. Jury is still out on this one. But the 2010 draft looks more and more like a bust to me.

Honestly Ross should throw the bank at the Packers GM Ted Thompson. Best in football !!!

Why would he leave?

His team is going to be rolling for 5-6 years.

Plus that team is owned by the fans...so there is no $$$ that needs to be funneled to them...all the income stays in the company....

They will throw the $$$ to keep him...

I don't think anyone is saying it's as easy as a HC change, or that Ireland has done awesome. But we clearly are in better shape talent-wise than we were when they got here. (That's more a reflection of how truly horrible the previous regimes were than how good this one is). But now at least we do have a core of young talent. Their biggest mistake was to not target a franchise qb in the past couple years, and that will be their downfall.

But think what the new regime will inherit: a perrenial probowl LT and a promising young top center, the 2 most important positions on an o-line; an apparently pretty good young rb, a top slot reciever in Bess, a decent workman receiver in Hartline, and a potential elite beast in Marshall (if he has a decent qb that he respects throwing to him, he'll excel. He's a diva receiver - get over it. Still the best #1 wr option we've had in years). So if the new regime gets to pick their new qb and pick up a TE, it's not a bad offense to walk into as a new HC or GM. They're going to live or die by their QB choice, just like every other regime - at least they have some good talent around him to up his chances of success.

I have no answer for how the defense goes from high to low like this, besides attitude and team culture. (Hate to say it, but every time JT comes back, our defense regresses mentally).

IDK know. some of the players that we let go are/were head scratchers. we seem to make the wrong decisons when we keep someone too long, and then in other cases when we don't keep them long enough.

donald thomas was promising before his injury, ted ginn while a **** head and drafted waaay to high certainly would look good on special teams.
