According to tweet from Ben Volin, Carolina claimed Frank Kearse off waivers. So we still have the 8th spot open on practice squad.

odd. why twitter gargles my balls as a reliable 'source'. i hope we still have him - i don't see much in terms of NT on our roster other than soliai.

Be glad to get an answer on this one.

Most teams don't keep a backup nose tackle on the active roster. With the number of snaps a starting nose tackle takes, he's almost a backup already (about as much as a nickel corner, give or take). A backup nose tackle is basically, then, a backup of a backup, except a backup nose tackle generally has very little use on special teams outside of like the field goal block team.

To keep a backup nose tackle on the roster, he's got to have special skills. Soliai was an example of this phenomenon... but even he was nearly cut a bunch of times. Ultimately his physical skill set was so exceptional they couldn't risk exposing him to the waiver wire. But he was definitely a minority case.

As for Kearse, I saw some good things in preseason. I think he has talent. But it's not Paul Soliai talent. If Big Paul gets hurt, we have a couple of guys who can fill in there in a pinch.

i hear ya. i was thinking more in terms of a developmental standpoint. it's always smart to have at least another NT on the roster - even if it is the PS (like we did last year with chris baker) - when you run a 3-4 defense. good to have a failsafe.

You can never have enough big guys on your team and NT's are hard to find.

No we don't.

That failsafe, at least at nose tackle anyway, is generally found on the practice squad. Most 3-4 teams run enough 4-3 that if push comes to shove they always have the option of switching over. I did some research last spring on Nolan's defenses and found he had to do this one of his years in San Francisco. The starting nose tackle got injured so they had to switch to a 4-3 full time.

Not that it matters anyway because apparently Ben Volin is now tweeting that Kearse just called him up to say he is staying in Miami to be on our practice squad. Apparently something got screwed up there and Carolina didn't claim him for their active roster at all.

No we don't.

Yes, we do. At various times, Randy Starks, Tony McDaniel and Ryan Baker have all played nose tackle for the Dolphins. Odrick played some nose tackle in college.

This is the definition of "in a pinch." And incidentally, all would probably be better at that spot than a rookie seventh round pick. Nose tackles take a long time to groom.

i doubt we'd switch to a 4-3 if soliai goes down, considering we've got starks, mcdaniel, and baker in there - but i know the PS is typically where the fallback NT usually ends up.

also pretty pumped about kearse staying in miami. he's looked good for a total nobody 7th rounder and NT is extremely important for our defense. i like when we actually develop our prospects instead of immediately giving up on them - which is kinda our 'thing'.

kearse not going to panthers?

saw this on facebook. i know its not the best source, but can anyone confirm this?
MIAMI DOLPHINS BANDITS
Frank Kearse said he is staying in Miami to be on Dolphins practice squad. My bad for the confusion.

Agreed on all counts.

As for your first paragraph, I wonder what would happen if Soliai were to go down, personally. We have guys who can play the nose in a pinch, as you say, but I think we would ultimately end up playing a lot more 4-3, or at least an "under" look with three down linemen and Wake with his hand down, which simulates the look of a 4-3 but is a bit different.

I know I'd rather have our top line guys out there perhaps playing a bit out of position over a seventh round pick -- promising though he might be -- getting a whole bunch of snaps over them. It'd be like saying if Reggie Bush got hurt we'd call up Nic Grigsby from the practice squad and make him the starter instead of giving Daniel Thomas those snaps.

actually miami dolphins bandits are a pretty decent source. i actually heard about kearse initially from them but did not post until it was confirmed with volin. makes me wonder if the bandits actually started the rumor though? lol anyway ive heard alot of other news from them way before other media outlets reported it and they were lik 90 percent of the time correct. Glad kearse will be on the practice squad.
