Agreed on all counts.
As for your first paragraph, I wonder what would happen if Soliai were to go down, personally. We have guys who can play the nose in a pinch, as you say, but I think we would ultimately end up playing a lot more 4-3, or at least an "under" look with three down linemen and Wake with his hand down, which simulates the look of a 4-3 but is a bit different.
I know I'd rather have our top line guys out there perhaps playing a bit out of position over a seventh round pick -- promising though he might be -- getting a whole bunch of snaps over them. It'd be like saying if Reggie Bush got hurt we'd call up Nic Grigsby from the practice squad and make him the starter instead of giving Daniel Thomas those snaps.
we'd definitely switch it up a bit back there - with the under look like you said, etc. - but i doubt we'd change the entire dynamic of the defense. while soliai and wake make the wheels go round in our 3-4 - one of them getting hurt won't force nolan to all of a sudden run a 4-3 - which has a completely different style and mindset - and isn't what nolan prefers/does best. his situation was most likely much different in SF - i'm assuming from a personnel/talent perspective - but who knows. we have the personnel and talent on the defensive side of the ball to survive an injury or two.
i know kearse won't sniff the field this year regardless of circumstances - i just like what i've seen - absolutely worth developing.
