Remember when the Dolphins were looking for a minority head coaching candidate to interview and kept getting turned down? Most notably, I am thinking about The U's linebacker coach Randy Shannon who said he knew Saban was going to get the job and didn't want to be treated as a token.

Eventually, the Dolphins got Art Shell (then working for the league office) to come in. He said he viewed it as an opportunity to get his name back into circulation for a head coaching job, and Wayne Huizenga said afterwards that Shell had impressed him and deserved another chance to coach in the league.

One year later, it looks like Art Shell will get the Raiders' head coaching job back. Good for him.

You got it backwards....Minority candidates were not turning down the Dolphins...it was the Dolphins turning down most of these candidates until they got the guy they wanted....Nick Saban.

no no they were turning down the opportunity to interview, because they knew the dolphins were going to take Saban if they could. They didn't want to just be given an interview in order to let the dolphins meet a league rule: they wanted a legitimate shot that they knew they probably didn't have with the phins

I read somewhere recently that Al Davis always regretted firing Art Shell prematurely...

What's ridiculous is that somehow it's all about race. The Dolphins decided they wanted Saban, that's their own choice. If Saban was African-American, and the Dolphins hadn't interviewed any white candidates, would there be a stink about that? I don't think so.

Excellent. Thanks for that update. And this was Wayne's, Eddie Jones' and the rest of the organizations reaction to the TOKEN comments:

No, we really did want to speak with Art Shell. We really were impressed by him. We were just more enamored with Saban. But Art Shell will coach again in this league. And him interviewing with us, brings him that much closer. (i heard this reaction straight from top people within the Dolphins organization, btw)

And you know what - they were right.

So maybe Randy Shannon should take his head, and pull from his as such the Hurricanes have plenty of problems of their own. Good for Art Shell.

reminds me of the old joke- What's the problem w/ Premature Ejaculator's Annonymous meetings?

seriously tho. i mean did they ever think that maybe the phins wanted what saban brought to the table? its like race is used as an excuse. I dont care if ur black, white, asian, hindu, or whatever, if u can come down to miami and make it the organization that it used to be then its fine with me. So what Saban's white. I think this Rooney rule (if thats what it was called idk i forgot) should just be taken out of the books all together. it makes people think that the only thing holding them back is race, when it probably is that they aren't qualified enough, or maybe the organization just doesnt buy into your philosophy.
