I pointed this out in the links thread, but as I thought about it, I thought it was worth talking about on it's on merit, so I'm starting a thread to discuss it.

The bases of this threat is from Saban's interview: in it he was talking about the OL and made the following statement.

(On if the decision will be made at the end of the preseason) – “Are we speculating? I can’t answer hypothetical questions. I know you guys are fishing. Whether we can or can’t make the decision will be determined by the players. You have to let it happen. The competition is good. They are all playing the same slots. We are talking about seven guys and we need to have them interchangeable anyway. I am supposed to say that it is really important that we get the same five guys playing on the offensive line. It is really important because they play together and have chemistry. If one guy twists his ankle, big toe, or toe nail, then you have to play with somebody else. Is that an excuse that we can lose the game? That’s just like asking how long it is going to take to turn a program around. How much time do you need? We don’t need any:eek: . We are going to do what we can do right now because I am not going to give anybody an excuse not to succeed. You ask me all these hypothetical questions and they are insignificant to me for what we are trying to accomplish. I am not mad at anybody. It is called intense.”
saban's interview

My question, does he really believe that, or is it a part of his wanting the team to over achieve and thus not give them an excuse to relax during this season. Now do we believe this team has everything it needs to make a real run at the playoffs?, does Saban think he has enough to make a run at the playoff? I'm mixed on this, and pleasantly surprised by his statement. One, as a fan, I want us to win the SB every year, but I do see the weaknesses on our team when they're there. But even then I still expect them to overcome those weaknesses, and when they don't, I tell myself, well I knew that...but if they overachieve and actually make it, then do I set myself up to think they can do it all the time..will our expectations be unrealistic? Bottomline, do you think we're rebuilding or do you think we're making a run for the playoffs?

based on his FA signings (Carter, Holliday, Lance, Jones, etc), he's planning on winning now and in the future. this team is not rebuilding, its retooling

i think we're retooling and relearning. but isnt that rebuilding? i don't know just as long as we dont re-live last year.

This team is rebuilding ATTITUDE, not talent.

Very good point, I think Saban saw the talent that we had already, he made adjustment bringing better player, brand new coaching staff and like you mention, new attitude.

Attitude is important on the field i think it wins a couple of games a year.:fire:

No, in light of the pick ups he made this year, I think he's planning on winning now and winning more as he goes on.

i think its clear that he wants to win now and wants to be competitive this year. But he's got to be wondering har far his QBs can take him.

Saban kicks so much ***.

He has totally 100% won me over and I believe he will eventually be one of the top 5 active coaches in the NFL.

The really good teams lock up key positions (QB, OT, DE, CBs, K) for the long term and are always rebuilding/retooling every offseason. That is the nature of the NFL now.

Look at the Eagles, 4 times they reached the NFC championship game, yet, there were changes in lots of areas, other than CB, QB, OT, DE, and K. They had all kinds of RBs, WRs, OGs, LBs, coming and going over those four years.

To think you arent going to be rebuilding and retooling each and every year isnt logical with the way the cap is, injuries, aging vets, etc. It has to be done whether the team was good or bad the previous season. Rarely do you see a team not make several changes in starters in a 2 year span. The continuity is just not there anymore for teams. I believe success really depends on the players in these "key" positions, and the coaching staff a team has.

I like the approach Saban is taking.. maybe in his head he has an idea of how many games he expects to win, maybe not.. but I like that he won't say "rebuilding" or make predictions about how long it will take to get back into contention. And the reason I like it, is because I agree whole-heartedly with his sentiment about "not giving anybody an excuse to fail."

There's an old saying "Whether you think you can, or think you can't, you're right." If you give somebody a built-in excuse for failure, you make it a LOT easier for them to allow themselves to fail. Athletic performance is as much mental as it is physical, and I think Saban is absolutely correct to not let these guys think in terms of "oh, ok, this is a rebuilding year, so if I don't give full effort, no biggie, we're not expected to win anyway."

So far I have to say that I, for one, am very impressed by what Saban is doing. I don't know if we'll be a playoff team this year or not, but I would not be terribly surprised. I think seeing us go 9-7 or 10-6 is VERY optimistic, but not impossible.

Think about why hes signing all these veterans like kevin carter and schulters...he wants rookies to learn from experienced skilled players...i mean how much will crowder learn from junior suea and zach thomas??...what about matt roth from holliday, carter and JT??...it creates a ripple effect...if this isnt re building then i dunno what is...

I think we are doing both. With the veterans we already had and the ones we got this year, they are most definitely going to teach the rookies and younger players and a lot and are going to help them develop. With that said I think we have got the best of both worlds, a team with depth now, and also some young players who are learning from some great players and getting great teaching from the coaches as well. I think we can make a push this season but I am not going to make a prediction just yet.
