Dolphins | Soliai could return as a starter next year
Sun, 17 Jan 2010 18:54:40 -0800

Brian Biggane, of the Palm Beach Post, reports Miami Dolphins DT Paul Soliai could return as the team's starting nose tackle next season. Nose tackle is an offseason priority for the team, but there is a lack of candidates in the NFL Draft and free agency.

If we don't grab one of the DTs in this draft ima be pisssseeeed....This draft is pretty deep with DT and Dan Williams to me seems like he could be the next stud we are looking for.

Soliai and 2 more DT's for depth, plus you add a few young fast LBers who can get the pressure on the qb and the D will be better.

I could live with another year of Soliai and Ferguson if he chooses to return for one more year.

Yeah, I was actually calculating this scenario since I realized that there really won't be any quality NTs available. Wilfork is not leaving NE (franchise tagged, if not long term deal), Hampton isn't going anywhere (he should end up franchise tagged), and if we draft someone, its going to be in a later round. Do you really want a late rounder starting over Soliai? I sure dont.

I'd actually re-sign Ferguson to be the backup, something like a Pennington to be Henne's backup scenario. Then, I'd draft a late round NT to groom behind them as the 3rd stringer. Leaving us with a depth chart of:

NT- Solia/Ferguson/rook

Then, if the rook and/or Soliai don't show that they can be a future starter, you use the 2011 offseason to make NT offseason priority #1. Next...

Paul Soliai as a starter is the worst idea they could have going into next year. He is rotational type player and the Palm Beach Poster article is all speculation, typical of their reporting.

Casey Hampton, Ryan Pickett, Tank Johnson and Jamal Williams (if cut) could all be available. Plus, Dan Williams and Terrance Cody will both be there at 12.

I say sign one of those UFA's, bring Ferg back and Soliai. I am tired of lack of depth at such an important position.

With the position being deep in this draft we should (and will probably) draft a DT in the first 3 rounds.

Soliai is serviceable and could be good for us IN A ROTATION. He is not an elite DT by any stretch and that means we need another guy. Ferguson, even if he is that guy next year, would only be a 1 year deal.

We draft a DT on the first day in the draft, bank on it.

i have no problem with him being a starter - for the short term at least. he improved leaps and bounds this year and if he can figure out to manipulate that mutant size and strength into leverage ... watch out. ferg will most likely come back so that 1-2 punch is not all that bad.

this draft has some nice NT's that can be had in the late rounds. see how soliai does starting - rotate him out with ferg - and develop a late rounder like cam thomas or ekom udofia. sounds good to me.

For a guy with Soliai's size, strength and mobility, he is a disappointment. Paul needs to rededicate himself to the cause. He needs to work his tail off and not only keep his weight down but he needs to do a lot of film study to reach his full potential. He seems to turn his motor on and off far too often.

however he is a huge man, and should be cheap to keep in miami. He will get better with better Lbers.
but you need a DC who will use the right packages for the talent they have,
