Gholston ran an impressive 4.57 unofficial forty time in his first run...it will be interesting to see if Chris Long can match or better that time because the two are competing for the right to be the first DE in a 4-3 scheme or OLB in a 3-4 to be taken off the board...it's very unlikely that Long will be able to match that time.

No Chris Long won't match that, he is significantly bigger than Gholston.

Thats like expecting Rodrique Wright or Vonnie Holliday to run as fast as Jason Taylor.

Gholston only weighed six pounds less than Long during weigh-ins.

Gholston 4.57 at 266

C. Long 4.71 at 272

Chris Long also hurt his thumb in the bowl game and hasn't been able to lift, which is why he wants to wait to lift on is pro day versus at the combine. Football however, is not track, its more important how a player gets off the line and his pass rushing skills than how he does in a track like sprint race.

No one in their right mind would challenge that Gholston is a specimen and a workout freak. Indeed, when his bandwagon first started on this site that's precisely what was listed as his strength: being one heck of an athlete. What people are questioning about Gholston is his consistency and dedication. He's been known to take plays off, lose concentration, and have his focus on the field diluted. His explosion and skill is amazing, he just doesn't use it all of the time. That's why despite his combine numbers he's not the #1 overall pick.

Is anyone else shocked at how poorly Campbell and Ellis timed? Personally I expected Campbell to post something like a 4.8 as he was supposed to be one of the best athletes around ... but this time is quie pedestrian, and given his mediocre production, should see him fall to the 2nd round if he cannot better that 40 time IMHO.

Absolutely, if your choosing between the two, its the superior athlete versus the superior football player. I tend to lean towards the football player myself.

You are correct, football is not track but does share some elements of if it. If you watch pass rushers like Jason Taylor on obvious passing down, you will see them get into the same sprinter stance they use at the combine for the 40-yard test.

By your logic Groves should be in the mix cuz he ran a 4.50.
Long is the clear cut premier DE in this draft.

I think it all comes down to instincts and character and inches between Gholsten and Long. Long has the tradition of his father on his side. Gholsten is plan B IMO in case we trade down a few spots and still lose on Long. but it is still early. I could not be dissapointed if we got either one. I would also be happy with Jake L as well. Either way,one problem solved IMO.

My point exactly...if we were looking for a DE...thats one issue...but we're looking for a 3-4 OLB. Seems to me you would be looking for a 250 lb player who can run in the 4.5 area...rather than a heavier player that runs in the 4.7 area....and playing a different position than he played in college.

Digital...

I am.

I am one of the advocates who suggest that we trade down with Dallas. At that # 22 or 28 spot I was looking at Campbell. I am really surprised. Most estimates had him at 4.8...

Maybe there is a story behind the scene as in the case with Jeff Otah running a high 5.
