I noted a number of you guys have not been overwhelmingly interested in signing Antowain Smith. While I still believe he is one of the best values out there for us right now, I respect your opinions. I believe he is a solid pickup for he has great size, can still block effectively, and can get those one to three yard first downs on third down when he is called upon. He would be a great 3rd down back. Admittedly, he is not the same back that essentially carried New England through the 2001 season to a Superbowl victory; the 34 year old still has plenty of gas in the tank for our purposes. Finally, he is a “team player†and will take a very modest salary.

I liked Davenport in Green Bay. However, I am still apprehensive about his previous two injuries. I do not like Ron Dayne at all. I never have. He is simply another example of a back that excelled in his system in college but could not replicate the results on the professional level. He has a big head on his shoulders and will undoubted ask for a great sum of money and/or a longer contract then we want to give him. Since we will have Sammy back in week five and Ricky back next year, I do not want Dayne’s oversized butt hanging around here for very long. Finally, Lee Suggs… well, I really do not know too much about this guy, which makes me slightly leering of signing him. The only item I do know is that he is exceptionally injury prone. Admittedly, I never watched the Browns play enough to provide insightful commentary on Suggs.

I was looking over some of the other cuts and saw four other names of interest. I really like Quentin Griffin, formerly of the Broncos and Chiefs. During his rookie year in 2004 I thought he ran very similarly to Barry Sanders. (Of course I thought the same about John Avery too at one point) He could actually make a cut in the middle of the field and keep his momentum. Griffin is very elusive and quick. He has really good hands and brings youth to the position. Whether or not he was merely a product of the Bronco’s running system, I like him.

Artose Pinner is also worth a look. While I know about as much about him as Lee Suggs, I do remember that every fantasy magazine in the country had him beating out Kevin Jones for his job a year ago. I know he has good hands, but I really have not watched him run as much as I would like.

Another person I would like to bring in for a workout is Rod Smart. Yeah yeah yeah, I know, he hate me, name recognition, blah blah. Whatever you have to say about that, he had some balls in Carolina. The guy has a very powerful first step and will drive his legs until he is totally wiped out. He is an idea third down back as well. He can block somewhat, has solid hands, and can make some of those tough yards. Furthermore, he can play special teams quite well and made a number of tackles for Carolina over the years.

Finally, a few of you expressed concern about OL depth. I have just the guy to bring in – Ross Tucker. I cannot believe the Browns released him considering they just gave a 6th round pick to the Pats for him AND that he started the last three preseason games for them at center. Suppose Hank Fraley is an upgrade for the Brownies or something,,, despite the price tag. Anyway, Tucker has great size and strength. He is a proven run and pass blocker and has started for the Bills, Redskins, and Patriots over the last five years. Further, he can play both guard positions or at center.

What do you guys think?

Well Nick is certainly NOT done with the roster. It will be tinkered with more before the game at Pittsburgh. He said they will look long and hard at the players who were cut by other teams and if he thinks anyone is an upgrade over what we have, he'll pursue that player.

Was Nick in Michigan when Charles Rogers was there? I also think Lionel Gates is some one the Dolphins should consider. I really hope we get Gates or Pinner.

Chris lewinski G Minnesota.

I agree on Pinner or Gates but I have not seen either.

I don't really think we need another RB. Brown and Minor can carry the load until Morris returns. I like the idea of Tucker. Anyone but Anderson IMO.

GO PHINS~!

Nice write up, I did one too, before I saw this one. However, mine wasn't so in depth. You know who I also forgot in mine. Arlen Harris!

I really like Davenport and Suggs but that's a decision that will be made by the medical staff, not the coaches. From the coaches point of view I think it's clear they have the talent so it will probably just come down to whether the medical staff says either one is healthy.

I think Smith's greatest attribute is reliability. Unfortunately, I think you can rely on him not being a very good runner at this stage in his career. He does bring intagibles, blocking, etc... though and he wouldnt be the worst choice in the world for a 4 game fill-in.

The more I look at the backs, I'm leaning towards Pinner. He was comparable to Jones in Detroit, is a vet, and is a better runner than Smith IMO.

I like Quentin too, but I have a feeling Nick will go for a bigger guy.

Suggs or Davenport would be ok too, but probably aren't ideal short term fill-ins unless we're 100% sure they're healthy. They seem more like longer term potential guys to me.

On the O-line, I wouldn't mind replacing Wade Smith, but it has to be someone who can play center. Wade Smith is probably going to be cut when we get Berger and Toledo back anyway. I don't see us keeping 10 O-lineman for the whole year. The reality is we're using 10 spots but only have 8 guys who can suit up come Thursday.

Pinner was always solid but not great in Detroit when he was healthy. Problem was he was often not healthy. I understand he was a beast in college.

I might get slammed for this idea, but another name that hasn't come up, is Mike Haas, WR from Oregon State. He was the Bilitnikoff Award winner. Drafted by the Saints in the 6th round. His weakness is that he's not tall and hasn't got a great vertical. But he runs perfect routes, doesn't make mistakes, blocks great, never ever gets injured, and works harder than everyone else. Think Steve Largent. He was a walk-on at OSU. I don't know if he's good enough to be one of the top 5 receivers. But he's the kind of guy that if you put him on the practice squad, I think you'll find him on the 52 man roster by the end of the season.

I like the following guys...it will be interesting to see who makes it today.

Charles Rogers WR Detroit
Reggie McNeil WR Cincinnati
David Jones TE Cincinnati
Najeh Davenport RB Green Bay
Rob Petetti OT Dallas
Albert Toeanina OG Carolina
Ben Wilkerson OC Cincinnati
Cameron Vaughn LB Denver
Roderick Green LB Baltimore
Terna Nande LB Tennessee
Nate Salley DB Carolina
Gerrick McPhearson CB New York

I also think we can wait out the Titans for a few games this season and complete the trade for Chris Brown.

Go Dolphins!

How come nobody has mentioned Fonoti the guy could be a Huge adition, and he has worked with Houck before ......
