I noted a number of you guys have not been overwhelmingly interested in signing Antowain Smith. While I still believe he is one of the best values out there for us right now, I respect your opinions. I believe he is a solid pickup for he has great size, can still block effectively, and can get those one to three yard first downs on third down when he is called upon. He would be a great 3rd down back. Admittedly, he is not the same back that essentially carried New England through the 2001 season to a Superbowl victory; the 34 year old still has plenty of gas in the tank for our purposes. Finally, he is a “team player†and will take a very modest salary.
I liked Davenport in Green Bay. However, I am still apprehensive about his previous two injuries. I do not like Ron Dayne at all. I never have. He is simply another example of a back that excelled in his system in college but could not replicate the results on the professional level. He has a big head on his shoulders and will undoubted ask for a great sum of money and/or a longer contract then we want to give him. Since we will have Sammy back in week five and Ricky back next year, I do not want Dayne’s oversized butt hanging around here for very long. Finally, Lee Suggs… well, I really do not know too much about this guy, which makes me slightly leering of signing him. The only item I do know is that he is exceptionally injury prone. Admittedly, I never watched the Browns play enough to provide insightful commentary on Suggs.
I was looking over some of the other cuts and saw four other names of interest. I really like Quentin Griffin, formerly of the Broncos and Chiefs. During his rookie year in 2004 I thought he ran very similarly to Barry Sanders. (Of course I thought the same about John Avery too at one point) He could actually make a cut in the middle of the field and keep his momentum. Griffin is very elusive and quick. He has really good hands and brings youth to the position. Whether or not he was merely a product of the Bronco’s running system, I like him.
Artose Pinner is also worth a look. While I know about as much about him as Lee Suggs, I do remember that every fantasy magazine in the country had him beating out Kevin Jones for his job a year ago. I know he has good hands, but I really have not watched him run as much as I would like.
Another person I would like to bring in for a workout is Rod Smart. Yeah yeah yeah, I know, he hate me, name recognition, blah blah. Whatever you have to say about that, he had some balls in Carolina. The guy has a very powerful first step and will drive his legs until he is totally wiped out. He is an idea third down back as well. He can block somewhat, has solid hands, and can make some of those tough yards. Furthermore, he can play special teams quite well and made a number of tackles for Carolina over the years.
Finally, a few of you expressed concern about OL depth. I have just the guy to bring in – Ross Tucker. I cannot believe the Browns released him considering they just gave a 6th round pick to the Pats for him AND that he started the last three preseason games for them at center. Suppose Hank Fraley is an upgrade for the Brownies or something,,, despite the price tag. Anyway, Tucker has great size and strength. He is a proven run and pass blocker and has started for the Bills, Redskins, and Patriots over the last five years. Further, he can play both guard positions or at center.
What do you guys think?
