I spent the majority of this evening reviewing old Parcell's drafts, that is to say, reviewing relatively recent Parcell's drafts, and a few patterns emerged for FinFans consideration:

1. The position that Tuna has drafted with his first pick the most often is..LB..with Farrior, Demarcus Ware, and Bobby Carpenter heading the list.

2. The second most frequent position is QB and CB with Pennington and Bledsoe, and Newman and Ty Law leading the charge.

3. In the 2nd round the position that Tuna drafts the most frequently is Guard, with Thomas, Rucci, Kratch and Johnson all making Tuna's #2 pick the most often.

Guard also make the 3rd round pick the most often with Wiltz, Peterman and Loverne.

4. The earliest Tuna has drafted a Recieving Te is Anthony Fasano at #2, he tendency is to take Te later in the draft, now it is true that he did take Anthony Becht at #1, but primarily Becht's job is to block, the point is debatable of course.

5. Tuna simply LOVES taking offensive Tackles, with 9 being taken over all.

The vast majority of those are taken in the 4th round or later.

6. Wr is Tuna's orphan position, he generally drafts them later in the 5-7 range, with 3 being taken early, Kevin Lee, V. Brisbey and D Ward being taken early, and parcell's has yet to spend a #1 or even a low #2 on a Wr, Terry Glenn was not Tuna's pick...at all...

7. Safety is under drafted by Tuna, none are taken early.

8. After Guards, De is Tuna's most consistent #2 pick, with Hatcher, Slade, Boose and Dt's tending to go at #3, with Spears being the deviation from his norm.

9. in the 5-7 range, Tuna targets Tackles, Defensive Backs, and Wr making the most frequent appearances in that range.

10. Tuna has never had a team that he did not draft a Center for, with William Roberts with Gmen, JP Machado for the Jets, Joe Burch for the Pats and Alan Johnson for the Cowboys, all 4th rd picks, and 1 a 2 and a 3 being used on the position.

Now granted, this is not to quality research in it's depth, the list stops more or less in 1988, and tracking some drafts required scrolling through each pick in the draft to find whom was drafted so gaps can occur.

BTW, Tuna took a Rb back in 1986 at #1, a guy named George Adams, he didn't pan out and Tuna has not taken a Rb at #1 since then...

He wasn't running drafts w/ the Giants so the 80s refernces are invalid, he lost his poweres in NE in 1996 and he wasn't in charge of our 2000 draft- that was Al Groh.

He left NE exactly because his view did not win out and the pats drafted Terry Glenn anyway, Tuna was rumoured to want Tony Brackens the De/Lb at that pick.

When he did run the Jets drafts, he went oline crazy, specifically at Tackle and he made more then a few reaches with Nebraska Qb Scott Frost being drafted to play Safety in the 3rd round, no wonder he put the Jets in Salary Cap Purgatory because he didn't draft very well in 1998 or 1997...

In Dallas, the 2005 draft IMO was not Parcell's work, 2006 had more of Parcell's feel to it.

Tuna has mancrushes on Guards, Tackles and De/Lb's who can rush the passer Dominizzo, every place he has went he has picked one of those types of players...at least..Chris Slade, McGinnest, D Ware etc.

Chances are great that we will see at least one of that type of player drafted early this season with one of our second rd picks at least.

Thanks for the info Padre! I still think we shouldn't rule out Gholston at the top of the draft if he has a good combine; IMO, he seems like he'd have an easier transition to OLB than Chris Long.

Gholston is a definite sleeper for no. 1. IMHO his combine numbers will shoot him up the boards. He is quite the athlete.

Agreed. I still like Chris Long a lot too and would be fine with Gholston, Long or Dorsey at #1, I just simply dread the Jets, or worse, the Pats drafting Gholston and having him terrorize us for years.

Chris Long and Gholston are Parecll's types of players, with C Long being more in the mold of McGinnest and Slade and Demarcus Ware.

The bumper crop of De's this year probably has Tuna and Ireland drewling, guys like Harvey and Merhling are typical Parcell's guys in the 2nd rd.

I think TE Cottam is a strong possibility with our 4th. Merling if he lasts would definitely be a consideration for us at the 2nd

There are only so many teams and a bumper crop of that style of De Adam, we will have a good one waiting for us at #33 if we keep the pick.

Then a Guard or Tackle at #59.

For me, if we go Te, I'm thinking that Carlson from ND in the 4th or later will be our guy, he does everything well, and he plays ST's, and Bavaro and Fasano both came from Notre Dame.

Granted, past actions do not guarantee future actions, but there do have a tendency to repeat themselves, especially if Ireland and Tuna use the same methodology to select players as they did in the past.

I'm pretty sure evaluating Giants drafts in regards to the tuna is fruitless, George Young was the GM there and ran the drafts.

Look at the Jets and Dallas drafts during his reign and I believe you will get a more accurate picture.

Adam, wishful thinking I would imagine, although getting Merling at 32 would be tremendous. I fear he'll go off the board in the top 20.

For a 1 year wonder, Brackens had a lot of great years. 7 sacks as a rookie, 7 more in year two, 12 in year four, 7.5 in year five, 11 in year 6.

Et cetera.
