Someone answer this question.

He's only a rookie, drafted in the fourth round, on a bad nfl team with a bad qb. What do you expect? His returns have been sloppy though

Agree the Ginn trade was stupid. Hated him as a receiver but he's a great return specialist. Has three special teams touchdowns for the 49ers. Miami has zero since trading him.

You cant seriously be comparing Gates with Ginn right now. Aside from only having 5 NFL games under his belt he has a coaching staff that has shown no ability to develop young talent. Gates may or may not make it but I'd like to get a real staff in place to determine and develop his talent.

he needs time. and you have to remember who the coaching staff is. they dont play to players strengths.

Gates ****ing sucks. Ginn had a lot of baggage with him because of the absurd draft position and his association with CamCam's epic failure.. That ***** should never be lined up at WR. I can see getting rid of him. But I can't see getting rid of him as a return man when this FO has no clue how to replace him. I have no idea why Bush isn't back there every time. It's not like we're using him on offense except to run up the gut.

For all we know, Gates will run out of bounds to avoid contact, too -- no way to tell because he hasn't gotten the ball in his hands. But give him a QB who can throw those long balls accurately and he could be the next Mark Duper.

Considering the implosion of this team, it's way too premature to etch any Gates judgments in stone.

I did chuckle knowingly, when the announcers last week were critcizing Teddy for not fighting for a crucial 1st down. But still and all though, we already had forked over the fools gold for him and if only as a field-stretcher and return threat, he certainly was worth a helluva lot more to us than the 5th we got in exchange. Another il-conceived Ireland move.

If we had been semi smart, we would of kept P Livas. He was doing well in kick and punt returns. Now we are close to last in the NFL

Last week Bush went back to field a punt and the Jets did that same that that team did with Livas, they kicked short and almost out of bounds.

This is something that people who say that understand football do not seem to understand. R Bush did not score on that punt return, in fact he only made 6 yards.

So by their view, R Bush was a complete failure. What they are missing is maybe someone no one ever taught them for they never figured out for themselves.

And that is the simple fear that a player might be able to take one back in powerful and useful. So if the kicker kicks 50 yards to player A and only 45 yards to player B then player B simply by being on the field "made" 5 yards.

Interestingly, Bush made 6 yards on his one return.

D Bess had 3 returns, one for 16 yards. But he ended up with 9 yards on 3 returns. Only a 3 yard average.

The main problem with Gates is almost no experience and is seems like no one told him about the new spot the NFL kicks off from. Once again against the Jets he takes the from deep in the endzone out to the 14 yard line.

This was his longest return of the day, 22 yards, yet 8 yards of it was in the endzone. So if he simply down the ball, we start at the 20 instead of at the 14,

2-N.Folk kicks 73 yards from NYJ 35 to MIA -8. 10-E.Gates to MIA 14 for 22 yards (27-E.Cook).

2-N.Folk kicks 66 yards from NYJ 35 to MIA -1. 10-E.Gates to MIA 20 for 21 yards (88-P.Turner).

2-N.Folk kicks 66 yards from NYJ 35 to MIA -1. 10-E.Gates to MIA 21 for 22 yards (88-P.Turner).

There is a 4th one somewhere but this shows just how poorly at kick offs Gates is.

I couldn't have said it better myself! In the return game, it is all about net field position. Livas put a little bit of fear into kickers and punters so they directed their kicks so as to minimize his returns. However, in directing the kicks, they lost distance thus affording the Dolphins better field position even if Livas did not break out for some amazing return. Gates is certainly fast enough but he has absolutely no vision on returns and his first move is nonexistant. Thus he just runs up the field on kickoffs to about the ten or fifteen and gets clobbered! Another wonderful move by Ireland & Sparano. I also have no idea why we got rid of Ginn for a fifth. His returns were worth more than that and we never gave him a chance as a number two. He is a sissy and runs out of bounds but he is a genuine threat on returns. Nevertheless, releasing Livas was a huge mistake because the morons that we kept instead of him have had absolutely no positive impact whatsoever! At least he could have impacted our field position a bit so our piece of crap offense wouldn't have to start inside the 20 nearly every possession.
