Not that I'm opposed to the hire - just not sure why everyone else is so head over heels for him. He's unproven at the DC position. Sure he's been in the league for 30+ years, but if he was that great, why was he still a positions coach?

Again, I'm not opposed to it, just hoping someone could shed some light on why its such a "great hire."
 
You can blame Mike Brown for holding him down for awhile. Just last year Andy Reid wanted him as his DC in Philly but Brown refused to let him interview. He has gotten great production with what he has had to work with in Cincinnati and is very well respected.
 
I thought the same thing myself, the guy has been a position coach for I think 11 years with the Bengals and has yet to land a DC job, I do know Andy Reid wanted him last year to be his DC but the Bengals denied the interview. The Bengals have ranked pretty high the past few years in pass-defense under his direction, plus he has worked with Mike Zimmer the last 4 seasons and Zimmer is regarded as one of the best DC's in the league, so hopefully he has benn picking Zimmer's brain a little bit, only time will tell if this is a good hire or not, one thing is for certain he is coming into a good situation with a pretty good defense, I just hope he brings an "attack" style defense instead of that vanilla defense pasqualoni applied!
 
Coyle, 56, has helped develop defensive backs such as Johnathan Joseph and Leon Hall in his Cincinnati tenure, while also squeezing solid production out of players such as Deltha O’Neal, Pacman Jones and Chris Crocker. The Bengals’ defense finished ninth in the NFL in passing yards allowed this year, 14th in 2010 and sixth in 2009.
Coyle previously was a defensive coordinator for 16 seasons at the college level, at the Marine Academy, Holy Cross, Maryland and Fresno State.
 
I don't know if I can "sell" you on him as I am taking a wait and see approach myself. Philbin and Sherman have worked before with Coyle so they know him well. I trust their opinion when it comes to putting a staff together.

Coyle does have defensive coordinator experience at the college level, so while it is at a different level, he isn't totally in the dark on how to run a defense. Also, I think the main reason why he was stuck as the secondary coach in Cincinnati for so long is because the Bengals were never willing to let him leave. As already mentioned in this thread, the Eagles wanted him last year as their DC, but the Bengals denied them from talking with him. The question is, if they denied the Eagles last year, how many other teams over the years did they deny? Also, it was reported that if Mike Zimmer landed a head coach job, the Bengals were just going to elevate Coyle as their DC.

Anyhow - Coyle's DC experience in college is reassuring, but I'll definitely still take the "wait and see" approach as well. In my opinion he's the biggest wild card in our new coaching staff.
 
Not trying to be rude, but whether you're sold on him makes no difference. He is the DC whether anyone likes it or not. Therefore, you have to accept it. That's all. I like the direction the Dolphins are going and feel that it is far from what we have been having to deal with. I am very optimistic about this team pushing forward. It all hinges on a QB, and I think we land either Manning or Flynn. It's just a feeling I get.
 
I believe in Philbin at this point and will believe in him till he gives me reasons not to.

Sounds like the original poster was just looking for some information on our new coaches. Possible trying to find some optimism himself....
