Yeah that Jags season is one that definitely sticks out in my mind. I remember Capers showed up and their D was just wild man. Tony Brackens was awesome, he brought the zone blitz (which KILLED Dan Marino in that playoff game)...it was a pretty good D.
And I remember when he coached Carolina, those teams reminded me a lot of Saban teams. A lot of savvy vets to get them through, eventually the cap caught up to them.
In Houston, I truly believe that Charlie Casserly just sucks at franchise building. Dom Capers I think got suckered into playing David Carr as much and as early as possible, when a MUCH safer approach would have been to grab a stable veteran to play while Carr learned the ropes. The D was never strong in Houston but it has definitely been stronger than the O...and you knew Houston came to play on any given sunday when they walked into our house Week 1 in 2003 and did something that hadn't been done in like a decade...beat us in our home opener.
I mean no doubt we had our problems back then, but one thing we were not terribly prone to under JJ or Wanny was the trap game...someone brought it up in VIP but we were something like 53-18 against opponents with losing records in the nine-year JJ/Wanny reign...which included 2004 when we pretty much lost to everyone.
And one thing we ALWAYS did was win the home opener and win at home in September. Had we won that game we'd have been 11-5 and in the playoffs that year, all else equal.
