Most people on this sight jump out of their skin when ever another team in the division signs someone. Whenever there are even rumors people freak out, take the Julius Pepers incident right when NFL network said Julius Pepers is talking with the Patriots people started going crazy "how will jake long do with JP, should we trade our picks for him, what will we do bla bla bla" that was ridiculous man and you know exactly what i am talking about. Do you think the Patriots **** their pants when we sign someone no they dont. The same thing happened with T.O. right when he signed we had to go get a corner. Well you should get it by now if not your on your own. My point is simple trust our FO to make good decisions and let them do their job. We dont have to build our team around the the patriots or jets we need to build our team around the MIAMI DOLPHINS!

just saw your thread real driscoll wasnt tryin to steal your thunder you no what they say though great minds think alike

close thread

The 'keeping up with the joneses' attitude has been prevalent of late, though I never understood it... You cannot be 'reactive' to succeed in this league... you must be 'proactive'.

I guess I have a hard time understanding why we would model ourselves after or even tailor ourselves to stop the Bills, Patsies or the Jests... 3 teams who did not make the playoffs last year and who all needed to get better...

I hope the Patriots sign Peppers....they will have to offer him a $90 million contract which will kill the payroll for the rest of their players and they will have to fork over two first round drafts picks to Carolina. :chuckle:

They wouldn't sign him, they'd trade for him. And no, they wouldn't have to give up two firsts.

They would be required to sign him.
A franchise tag is not transferable, so the only option is to offer a contract extension. All a franchise tag does is offer the team compensation if another team signs the designated player.
So they have to agree with a contract before the trade or the Pats are giving up picks for nothing.
I, personally, would be all for that.

Teams are allowed to let a franchise player go then less then the 2 first round pick designation of a non-exclusive player. This happened last year with Jared Allen being traded for a 1st and I believe 2 3rd's.

Most likely NE would have to give up their first round pick. Which is indeed a steal. But, you are looking at a $90mil contract similar to Hanyesworth.

Sorry to absolutely burst your bubble but it makes no sense for the pats to sign Peppers. As Adam Schefter points out:

In his weekly appearance on WEEI in Boston, Adam Schefter of NFL Network said that the Panthers won’t be trading defensive end Julius Peppers to the Patriots.
That trade is not gonna happen,” Schefter told Dennis & Callahan of WEEI.
Schefter cited the financial investment that Peppers would require and the looming class of Patriots free agents (including Vince Wilfork and Richard Seymour), who will be on the market in 2010.

No, I know they'd sign him eventually, but what I'm saying is that they wouldn't sign him as a free agent as the initial poster was suggesting.

Yeah...they basically would. If your thinking Peppers will accept that much less of a contract then Hanyesworth, your nuts. Your looking at 40mil in guaranteed money alone.

Here's what Hanyesworth cap hits break down to. Expect very similar numbers.
2009: $7.0 million
2010: $8.85 million
2011: $10.65 million
2012: $12.45 million

Edit: These numbers may not be 100% accurate. I took them from a skins forum. But you get the drift

It's a natural reaction in the off season. It's sort of like the Cold War. If the Russians got X bomb, we needed Y bomb because that was better than the X bomb. Never mind we've got enough nukes between us that the world would pretty much cease to be...The point is, they have new tosy so we should have new toys.

I was saying a loooooong time back we wouldn't be making a big splash in FA. We didn't last year, we didn't this year. We did what we needed to do, and, upgraded the team in a signifigant way.

Stop putting words in my mouth. The initial poster said he'd love for the Patriots to sign Julius Peppers because they'd pay him big money and give up two firsts. I was correcting this, because if they were to aquire Julius Peppers it would be in a trade, therefore they would not be forced to trade Carolina 2 first round draft picks. Can you actually have a football conversation without tryiing to disagree, if my screen name was RonnieBrown4life then you'd probably tell me how right I was.

This clearly is an issue of semantics. When you said you would not "sign" him I thought you meant that the franchise tag would just transfer. You are right signing him to an offer sheet would require 2 1st rounders. I thought you meant that you would not have to sign him to a new contract. I thought you were debating that Peppers would not demand huge money. That is the reason I posted Haynesworth contract numbers.

You say the original poster said that the "pay him big money and give up two firsts." While he was wrong about giving up 2 firsts for Peppers but most likely with will be somewhere along a 1st and something else. Most likely they would have to give up at least a 1 and a later round pick for Peppers.
So this all was a misunderstanding.

No, it had nothing to do about your username. I actually didn't even notice until you pointed it out.

This is a copycat league, although I can't actually recall any team ever achieving great success through pastiche.
