After he made the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2014, Damien Williams didn't see the ball much as a third-string running back. He turned his 47 touches into a ho-hum 307 yards from scrimmage, two fewer than quarterback Ryan Tannehill's rushing total.

That was last year.

During the Dolphins' joint practices with Panthers leading up to the teams' preseason game in the second week, Williams got plenty work with the first team. His biggest highlight was getting a "Way to go 34!" for keeping Tannehill safe from the Carolina pass rush, leading to a big throw from the quarterback.

He backed that up in the game with great red zone work as a runner and receiver. Williams first scored on a strong 1-yard run, then caught a pretty inside slant pass from Tannehill for an 11-yard touchdown.

It's indication of the versatility and value Williams can provide. Even with the limited sample size in 2014, Pro Football Focus rated Williams as the No. 11 running back in the entire league and well ahead of Miller in the passing game.

Part of the reason Williams went undrafted in 2014 was his dismissal from Oklahoma in November of his 2013 senior season for a violation of team rules. But the Sooner's pedigree is hard to ignore, and Williams credits his time in the program for helping make the grade in an NFL offense.

Miller and Williams have the same size, but Williams is the stronger, better-built back. Joe Philbin and the offensive coaches are already wary of MIller's frame as a workhorse — he never it 20 carries in a game last season. The fact that Miller is a free agent in 2016 should make them want to take a longer look at Williams, anyway.

Miller is the home-run hitter in the backfield with his blazing speed, but to keep him fresh and most effective, it would behoove the Dolphins to trust Williams in key situations, both on third down and inside the 20.

Yeah maybe when Williams develops any semblance of a vision. Rishard Matthews would display better vision as a running back

He's making a big impact in the passing game but as a runner...hasn't clicked yet.

I'm just not that impressed by him. Hopefully he continues to improve though.

He has a little vereen to his game.
Poor running vision really good reciever from the back field and can block

ultimately, he is going to shred a linebacker covering him on 3rd down

Eh hes a hell of a blocker

Williams can carve out a nice career as a relief runner and consistent 3rd down back who can block, get open and catch the pig.

I like the kid a lot. But I don't believe he's in in the same league as a ball carrier as LaMarvelous. And I think Miller has notably better burst and top end speed.

I keep sayin it but I really want to keep Miller in the future. The kid has done everything right and is still getting better...

He would NOT be easy to replace.

BNF.

this. His rushing average stinks up the field. Good situational player. If Miller is healthy end of season I would focus on bringing him back and not have some delusion that Williams is his replacement.

We could use in many different ways jut like a Reggie Bush

His splash won't be any more than it is right now. If you are hoping to see him emerge in to the #1 back, you are going to be disappointed. That will never happen.
He is a very quality receiving back and great to have in the rotation, but he doesn't have Miller's type ceiling. I like Williams a lot and I'm glad he's a phin, but his role won't grow any bigger than what it is.

Damien Williams is built like a power back with the speed to go outside.

But plays like Andre Ellington.

And you know what? That'd perfectly ok, he will never ever be great between the tackles, maybe not even average, but let him do what Andre Ellington is asked to do, and he can probably excel.

Get the man in space.
