Sorry Peyton, TD record still belongs to Marino

I love Dan as much as the next guy but you cant diminish what Peyton did. It wasnt a product of the rule either. Daunte culppeper was 10 td's behind so it isnt like everyones numbers are inflated.

Hey at least it is Manning who broke the record. He is so much like Dan in his Classy way, and attitude. Plus he was a huge Marino Fan growing up. Records are meant to be broken and it is nic ethat a Guy like Manning broke it instead of someone Who is a Jerk......Plus, which QB today reminds you most of Danny in his Hayday?? Peyton

First off, I have a great deal of respect for peyton and his ability. But there's something that I need to throw out there:

Just like the NCAA, I say we reward the athlete for making the playoffs and add the accumulated post-season statistics onto the season totals. That would leave Manning with 53 and catapult Danny ahead with 57...I'm calling Elias!

With the upcoming enshrinmenet I'm getting drunk on Marino nostalgia. I'm concerned that Manning's career stats, when all is said and done, will be considerably higher than our boy's. Seriously though, someone needs to slow this guy down. Does anybody have Kippy Brown's phone number?

He hasn't faced serious injury yet, the odds are he will.

Numbers are a funny thing, I believe just as you can look at Emmitt Smith and see a great runningback BUT not the greatest runner ever(even though he holds the record), in my mind Dan was a greater quarterback than Peyton is or probably will ever be.

I can't imagine what Dan would have done to defenses with an Edgerrin James behind him and a Marvin Harrison. Duper and Clayton were excellent but neither were a Marvin Harrison.

Dan did it when??? Exactly! He did it before the BS rules of you can't touch this guy before whatever yards. He did it because he could do it! He is the best pure passer ever. some would argue (including myself) he is the best quarteback to ever play the game. Best team? NO! Did he win a superbowl? NO! Best Quarterback to ever play the game? YES!
OK. Peyton is a great quarterback also. He also has never won a superbowl. Hall of Famer? Maybe. He(at this point)holds the record for most TDs in a season. Dan is a Legend...

This is an excellent point. I do not believe it is a BS rule, but you have seen the impact of this rule on TD passes throughout the league...This statement is dead on, and is the reason that PM broke the record. It could be the reason he breaks other records as well.
However, unfortunately for the GQBE's (Greatest QB ever) legacy, it is a fact of life. Someday they will change the rules for sacks more (such as the way it is now, which is a crappy rule about the QB is sacked even before he is tackled), and somebody that is not truly worthy will break that record, or they will widen the goal posts and somebody will break some stupid FG record (or they will even go back and say the jills won a SB, or wait, I guess that won't happen EVER!!)....Anyway, such is life, but no records or who holds them will impact the fact that Dan is the GQBE!!

.....How 'bout counting that shuffle pass TD to tie Marino's record as a handoff, will that work?......I'd have been embarrassed to have that count as a touchdown pass, but like any real player would take it none-the-less.

Sorry Dude!! According to the NFL the legue was emphasing the illegal contact rule in 1984 also. Read the article. So saying the only reason why Manning broke the TD record is because of the so called BS rule (illegal contact) is just that, BS.

Illegal Contact Penalties Are Way Up
Players, Coaches Just Looking for Some Consistency

By Leonard Shapiro

"Meantime, Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning, who plays at home Sunday against San Diego, is one touchdown pass short of tying Dan Marino's record of 48 set in 1984. He also has 4,168 passing yards, 916 yards short of matching Marino's mark of 5,084.

According to the league, in the season Marino set those records, game officials also were operating with a point of emphasis on the illegal contact rule.

Still, despite increases in all those offensive numbers, Perreira and Rich McKay, co-chairman of the Competition Committee and general manager of the Atlanta Falcons, said they're satisfied that the heightened officiating scrutiny on illegal contact is working exactly the way the committee expected. The statistical jumps are not significantly out of whack, they indicated, and the game has hardly been re-invented despite the complaints of many defensive backs, as well as some disgruntled head coaches.

"My response to the players is that we're playing the game by the rules," Pereira said. "I didn't write the rules, but our officials are enforcing them. The illegal contact rule was written to create balance between the offense and the defense. We became a little lax over the years in getting our guys to officiate it, and that's probably my fault. But we're calling it the way it's supposed to be called. It's up to them to adjust to it."

Records were made to be broken. Dan was and is the greatest pure passer of all-time!! There's a good chance that that will change in the future because it always does. Unitas was the man in his day until Dan came in. One day, someone will take his spot. Let's just enjoy the fact that we were privileged enough to see his greatness!

Personally, I think Manning will go down as this generation's Marino and Brady will be this generation's Montana. Manning will have all the records and no rings while Brady will have all the rings and none of the records.
