The Dolphins received formal permission this afternoon to interview Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin for their head coaching position, a source said.
Tomlin, 34, is considered one of the NFL's top young defensive minds. Tomlin just completed his first season as Minnesota's defensive coordinator after serving the previous five years as Tampa Bay's secondary coach. In January 2005, Tomlin was interviewed for a staff position by then-Dolphins coach Nick Saban but ultimately stayed with the Buccaneers.
ESPN reported the Dolphins also are seeking an interview with Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt as another potential replacement for the departed Nick Saban, who quit Wednesday to accept the head coaching position at the University of Alabama.
