The Dolphins received formal permission this afternoon to interview Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin for their head coaching position, a source said.

Tomlin, 34, is considered one of the NFL's top young defensive minds. Tomlin just completed his first season as Minnesota's defensive coordinator after serving the previous five years as Tampa Bay's secondary coach. In January 2005, Tomlin was interviewed for a staff position by then-Dolphins coach Nick Saban but ultimately stayed with the Buccaneers.

ESPN reported the Dolphins also are seeking an interview with Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt as another potential replacement for the departed Nick Saban, who quit Wednesday to accept the head coaching position at the University of Alabama.

only allowed one rusher for over 100 yards this year. Gotta give him a look for sure.

Hmm another ex-secondary coach who coaches up a horrible secondary.

Certainly give him an interview. He'd be a great young up and comer. He's a defensive guy, but one of the best new young one's around the NFL.....

PHINZ RULE!!!

The Vikings D were pretty insane this year, #1 rushing defense... I'm not sure if this guy is ready to be a head coach though. 1 year of defensive coordinator work? Then again, Eric Mangini of the Jets only worked as a defensive coordinator for 1 year.

hes not my top pick for HC, I dont know if you guys recalled the monday night game he had against the Pats but he's D got embarrassed on national tv, all they did was just spread the field and game over.

Yea because we need to improve our never ending always pathetic defense???

Come one, christ, get a freaking offensive coordinator not a defensive one!!
