According to a source close to the situation, Parcells’ loyalty to GM Jeff Ireland — who, coincidentally, was first hired as a scout in Kansas City by Peterson — coach Tony Sparano and many of the other coaches he brought to Miami is the primary reason he’s declining to exercise the gem of an out clause in his contract. “Those are his boys, and this (the Dolphins) is his legacy,” the source said. “He doesn’t want to hang them out to dry.”

The article goes on to say that despite Carl Peterson saying yesterday that he isn't coming to Miami, the matter is not closed.

Also says that is likely that Ross would give Parcells a one year extension on the escape clause. It says Parcells would like a year under Ross to see how he works before deciding to leave or not.

So what I am getting from all the news these past few days is this. Parcells wants to stay, but he doesn't want to give up his power. Ross wants Parcells to stay, but wants to give his buddy Peterson a job with the team. Wayne won't hire Peterson, so until the sale of the team actually happens, Peterson is out of a job. Even if the sale of the team goes through here soon and Ross hires Peterson, Parcells likely will stick around through the 2009 season to see how Ross works as an owner and if Peterson would be brought in to take some power away. If Parcells likes what he sees after 2009 he would stay, if not he would leave.

I think it would be smart for Ross to extend that escape clause right away and only hire Peterson if it is for a front office job that does not deal with the football operation itself.

Great Post Numblar!

I think this is just a matter of speculation by the media. I don't think Ross is going to make things uneasy for Parcells.

I don't like the idea of Peterson in Miami at all!!!

I actually hope Wayne-o wakes up and keeps the team. Sure, he's gonna take a hit on taxes eventually, but a smart business man will realize a winning team will generate more revenue. Season ticket sales are up, the gear is flying off the shelves, keep the team Wayne. Ross just gives me the creeps.

I don't think he is as horrible as we all make him out to be but we are fine with the people that we have.
I agree. I want at least 2 -3 drafts from Bill and Jeff. If Bill feels that we will be his legacy then that has me syched. I already consider him the greatest football mind and franchise builder in my lifetime and if we are the team he wants to be his legacy then I see SB's (plural) before he leaves.:beer1:

If Peterson wants Joe Bailey's job, that's one thing. As long as Bill and Co. are in charge of all things football, I'm happy.

As a HC, Bill is not even in the same league as Don Shula, but he does know talent, and what it takes for a team to succeed, this is why as VP, he is in the position that best suits him, GM might be better suit for him, but as VP he is able to at time visit the players and kick a little butt if he has to, as a GM, he would have no time.

I never said HC. Don't you think Bill could have built a better team for Dan? I sure as heck do.

Without question. However, I'm sure Bill and Dan would've clashed a lot, due to Bill's commitment to the running game.
With Dans nack for calling and changing the plays and Bills love for QB's? That would have been a marriage made in heav..... I mean hell.

I know, sorry if it sounded as I was defending Shula to your statement, I meant to just add that bit of info for those that think Bill was a better HC then Shula (Believe it or not there are quite a few).

As I wrote, Bill has a much better sense of talent, and yes, he would have surrounded Dan with better players, and with the right HC, Dan might have gotten his ring.....maybe many times over.

Edit: I also do have to add though that you said Parcells may be the greatest football mind, I would still put shula ahead of Bill there, not by much because of his waekness to evaluate talent, but inside and out, Shula knew football like very few.

I liked when Bum Phillips said "He can take his team and beat yours, and then take yours and beat his..."(said without a southern slang)

I think the problem was when the phrase "football mind" was put out there.

Bill might be a bit better at talent evaluation

But Don Shula has far and away a better football mind.
