The article goes on to say that despite Carl Peterson saying yesterday that he isn't coming to Miami, the matter is not closed.
Also says that is likely that Ross would give Parcells a one year extension on the escape clause. It says Parcells would like a year under Ross to see how he works before deciding to leave or not.
So what I am getting from all the news these past few days is this. Parcells wants to stay, but he doesn't want to give up his power. Ross wants Parcells to stay, but wants to give his buddy Peterson a job with the team. Wayne won't hire Peterson, so until the sale of the team actually happens, Peterson is out of a job. Even if the sale of the team goes through here soon and Ross hires Peterson, Parcells likely will stick around through the 2009 season to see how Ross works as an owner and if Peterson would be brought in to take some power away. If Parcells likes what he sees after 2009 he would stay, if not he would leave.
I think it would be smart for Ross to extend that escape clause right away and only hire Peterson if it is for a front office job that does not deal with the football operation itself.
According to a source close to the situation, Parcells’ loyalty to GM Jeff Ireland — who, coincidentally, was first hired as a scout in Kansas City by Peterson — coach Tony Sparano and many of the other coaches he brought to Miami is the primary reason he’s declining to exercise the gem of an out clause in his contract. “Those are his boys, and this (the Dolphins) is his legacy,” the source said. “He doesn’t want to hang them out to dry.”
