Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Scott Linehan has emerged as the favorite to land the head coaching job for the St. Louis Rams, league and team sources have told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Linehan is not a lock for the job, Mortensen reported Saturday, but he had an impressive interview this week and the Rams are doing more research on the 42-year-old assistant who served previously as the Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator.

The Rams initially expected to hire a coach with a defensive background but were disappointed when Gregg Williams signed a lucrative extension to remain with the Washington Redskins. Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera remains in the hunt after the Rams tried unsuccessfully to interview Tampa Bay Buccaneers veteran defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, who opted to remain in Tampa.

It now seems more likely the Rams will hire a coach from the offensive side of the football, the sources said, but that there is no imminent hiring on the docket.

The Rams have interviewed defensive coordinators Rivera, Tim Lewis (New York Giants) and Mike Zimmer (Dallas).

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Fassel interviewed Thursday with St. Louis officials, as the Rams continue to seek the successor to Mike Martz.

San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron is one of the finalists, too, Mortensen reports.

If you're going to make a second thread about a topic already under discussion, could you at least make what you post *readable* instead of it being in all white text?

:rolleyes2

I wonder do some people even bother to read some of the threads before they post to see if it's already been posted.

Cmon you guys, give the guy a break. It's not like we all haven't made mistakes posting.;)

He posted news from a legitimate sourse, albeit without a link.

Rams favor Linehan for head coach, report says

Dolphins offensive coordinator Scott Linehan has emerged as a front-runner for the head-coaching vacancy with the St. Louis Rams, according to a report on ESPN.com.

Linehan, 42, who also interviewed for the Texans' head-coaching opening, is expected to be called in for a second interview with the Rams next week.

Linehan is seeking his job as a head coach after four years as an NFL offensive coordinator -- the first three with the Vikings and last season with the Dolphins, where he engineered the league's 14th-ranked offense, 15 spots better than the 2004 unit.

Telephone messages to Linehan were not returned. Dolphins coach Nick Saban does not permit his assistants to speak to reporters.

The Dolphins' season-ending, six-game winning streak coincided with Linehan's shift from the coach's box to the field, where he helped direct an offensive improvement from 16.2 points a game to 26. Linehan favors a vertical passing attack, which fits into the Rams' style of play.

Also under consideration for the Rams job are defensive coordinators Ron Rivera (Bears), Tim Lewis (Giants) and Mike Zimmer (Cowboys). Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Fassel, Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and Fresno State coach Pat Hill have also interviewed with St. Louis officials, who are seeking a successor to Mike Martz and interim coach Joe Vitt.

If Linehan departs, potential successors could be tight ends coach Derek Dooley or receivers/offense coach Charlie Baggettt, who's also the Dolphins' assistant head coach.
