South Florida’s Fair Weather Fan Phenomenon

I can tell you this:

I lived on South Pine Island in Broward for 3 months back in 85'

Thats all it took for me to want to get the hell out of there. The people are just a different breed down there. thats my take. I go to Bills games when the Bills suck worse than us. They dont act like Dolphins fans.

The fact that Miamians have abandoned this team in droves after the train wreck of the last decade is a plus. As has been pointed out, why should the franchise be rewarded for a seemingly endless string of bad coaching hires, bad personnel decisions, more losing seasons since 2003 than in the previous three decades, no playoff wins since 2000, etc?

I'd rather have a fanbase that tells the franchise where they can stick it as opposed to the Chicago Cubs fanbase, for instance, who's perfectly happy to support a team that hasn't made it to the World Series since the 1940's (and hasn't won one in at least an eon), despite being in one of the largest markets in the country, and consequently, with no barriers to fielding a competitive team. This isn't your kid's tee-ball team. You don't have to support them "no matter what." Maybe the team should make a serious effort to become relevant as more than a late-season spoiler or a flash in the pan who gets trounced in the wildcard round before the Miami fanbase is labeled as fair-weather for their justifiable level of non-support.

Terrible excuse. The ENTIRE country's economy is down the toilet. Yet teams are still selling out with no problems in city's far worse off than Miami economy wise!
I don't appreciate your comment man. Obviously for you to say that you've probably never been thru the struggle. The economy is bad yea of course but also keep in mind we have one of the worst unemployment rates in the country, when you got some kind of money flowing you can always save a bit, when you ain't got shat flowing in its a totally dark situation when you sometimes gotta count up pennies to cop a damn mcdouble at micky d's.

How old are you?

You know age don't really matter, Im old enough to know what im talking about cause I been thru it. Its not like im sittin here in own damn crib picking out my boogers waiting for money to fall out of sky, Ive actually gone walkin in the damn melting miami sun, 100's of blocks to the malls to cop me a job, but no one has given me the opportunity so far. At this time you need a lever to get you in, just like my first job somebody got me in, unfortunately I didn't quit they fired me without cause manager had a lil temper tantrum. Sure I got my months of unemployment but now what, just waiting for a call to my girls phone since mine has been disco for 5 months! But I keep my head up always, life will turn brighter some day is what I hope.Hopefully phins start winning too and then they'll actually be worth it to go attend a game.

The fans just suck!!!! The chiefs have been awful for the past 30 years yet the arrowhead is known as the most hostile stadium in the league. The Seahags have the most boring team in existence yet their fans are incredibly loud. There's no excuse for Miami not to have a Boston/New York/Chicago/Philadelphia sports environment.

Perhaps age doesn't matter.

Grammar, diction, & syntax do. Hint. hint. nudge nudge. wink. wink. Say no more.

I only asked b/c if you were at an age where you were still in school or in the early ages of your career then it might be more difficult to be able to go to games (lots of factors play into it).

We're all in different situations of course.

What I would really like to say to you would get me kicked off this sight. I have been to over 50 home games. Do I suck? How many games have you been too? You know what I don't care what they do to me on here. You can piss off!

So you wanna use me as a point? At least do it properly! And what exactly are you tryna to state there bud? since me no comprende hint, nudge, wink language there mr.so smartpants...

P.S. Lets try to keep this topic related cause I see it might get out of hand quickly.

I am OK or on board with basically any explanation for the fairweather thing except the economy excuse.

The economy crashed everywhere. That's not the reason.

I have been a season ticket holder for twenty years and have discontinued my seats because:

- 10 years of frustrations and broken promises
- rising prices
- terrible customer service (for example, no one has even called me and asked why I did not submit a payment to my account)
- horrific decisions by the franchise which wants to turn the stadium into an amusement park (orange carpet events, celebrity sightings on the screne,)
- disengaged from the fanbase - all I have to say is having Tebow day when the Broncos came to play us... That was really f... up. That is like the Yankees having a Red Sox celebration.
-Club Liv - If you want to go to a night club, go to South Beach, bring back the orange bowl where the crowds made a difference.

I guess you have to do all of these things to divert the fans attention from on the field because of the bad product. With that being said, I still love the fish but I put my money where my mouth is, maybe they will get the big picture if more fans do the same (sounds like they are, 30,000 ticketholders down from 60k+)

Wow, they didn't even call you on the point I bolded above ... shocking!!! I thought they would mail bomb you & call regularly with special offers ... or at least invitations to events or something to get you interested..

BTW ... last few years ... did they offer many free tickets (to go with season tickets) the last couple years so you could invite friends? I think that's the best marketing & good-will ploy going .... a way to quasi-discount by letting season ticket holders take their friends ... & potential getting new customers who like the experience.

Think they should do this for every single ticket they can't sell ... could even do it on a rotational basis during good years.

Why should discerning persons purchase an inferior product? Ponder that question.

Stupid article.

EVERY fan base has fair weather fans. If you go look up attendance numbers for every team, the numbers all go down when the teams suck, and go up when the team is good.

Stop singling out miami. It's a myth.
