Dolphins coach Tony Sparano hinted that the team's interest in free agent Jason Taylor hinges on the progress of ex-CFL OLB/DE Cameron Wake.

"We're going to watch Cameron this week and see what Cameron does," Sparano said. "I know the Jason [Taylor] thing is out there." Bill Parcells reportedly went over Taylor's 2008 season and determined that he belongs in the NFL even if his play has fallen off. The Dolphins just don't want him to be a "progress stopper" for Wake.

They need to sign him already, first Tony said that we can not have enough OLB and now he is saying that it all depends on a player from CLF come on give me a break.

I would sign him, but it would have to be a reduced price. I would start JT and have wake come in on 3rd downs and have him blitz the qb. Besides, JT would be able to teach him alot and help him progress throughout the season.

a little competition never hurt anybody

Exactly. I don't really get this avoiding a 'progress stopper'.

If JT beats out Wake, then we A) Have a roster upgrade and B) Wake works harder to get his start.

If Wake beats out JT, we have a two-tiered pass rush option and less pressure on one guy, either an aging guy or an NFL rookie to be a three down guy.

I fail to see how stiff competition like this could ever have a negative impact.

he'll be able to determine Cameron's value in a week? seems to me if evaluation were that easy, 1st round draft picks would never bust. first thing i've heard Sparano say that i didn't much like, assuming the story isn't misquoted or he wasn't just blowing off a stupid question.

Yes I never quite understood this either.

So if JT can beat out a rookie/young player its going to hurt their development? I guess that means they would rather throw a young guy out there who isn't ready yet than play JT? I dunno, but I think signing him (cheap) will be nothing but good.

What's all the haggling about? If JASON TAYLOR 99, is going to play football. It had better be with the Dolphins. He's OURS. Period. Close thread.

You assume he would come cheap. I think there is some high stakes poker being played between Belichick and Parcells with Tampa Bay being the wild card. I think neither NE or MIA want the other to get JT cheap.

And I think that in a weekend camp you can see if Wake has the fundamentals down of the position or if he needs more work to have a shot to play it. Just like for the tryout players, minicamp is the first of many tests. If the guy can't pass the first (easy) one, you know he's not the answer. If he passes the first test, you're still not entirely sure, but you have a better idea. The testers have seen a lot of players come and go, I think they are pretty good at spotting quality.

We really should be all over this signing just for the sake of an injury. Even if Wake is what the staff is hoping for, who's to say him or JP doesn't get injured for a 3 week period, or even worse the season. Unless the issue resides in the contract, amount or length, this is a no brainer in my eyes.

Who cares about the pats? What did JT do for the redskins? Nothing. While I can understand the picture of JT coming off the edge and sacking a dolphin qb is sickening to some, let's get real. It's two games for what will more than likely only be a one year deal in which he will be lucky to get around on Long (or whoever he lines up against for that matter).

Just seems like a lot of hoop-la for a pretty average, past his prime, albeit Dolphin legend, DE. And would it be the worst thing in the world if our FO decided that our very cheap CFL gem was already better than JT? I think we should chill and not get too excited about the name Jason Taylor. Rather, go find some redskins tape and tell me if your impressed with a guy who basically only tries one move and then gives up on the play.

love to see taylor come back.
obviously after last season, I think it's a no brainer that it would be at a reduced price, I'm sure taylor knows this as well.

HOW reduced is probably the holdup on the whole situation.

I can't believe that so many people think that JT is going to sign and that he is worth signing.

This is all just a public relations exercise just like last year. They are just trying to be polite and trying to raise the price that the Pats waste on him.

If he signs here he would be a constant distraction from what they are trying to do. The media would 'empower' him & his mouth would be on center stage dancing all season long.
