The Wildcat could be gone one day, just no time soon.
If the Dolphins ran the Wildcat as frequently as coach Tony Sparano fielded questions about it these days, the team would lose the element of surprise.
During his 20-question media session Thursday, Sparano answered five questions about the formation that has taken the NFL by storm.
“From what I am gathering from every team in the league, all I am hearing about is Wildcat, Wildcat, Wildcat,” he said Thursday.
He said he’s curious to see how opponents defend it so coaches can determine how to adjust.
“We will have to see what kind of homework [the other teams] have done this off-season,” Sparano said. “We need to see what those adjustments are. Maybe try to stay one step ahead that way and see how we find those answers out during the course of a ballgame.
“Just don’t throw it out there and think you are going to have the answer on the first play.”
The Dolphins didn’t have the luxury of a feeling-out period last year when they trotted out the Wildcat for the first time at New England.
If it hadn’t been an instant success, Sparano said the ‘Cat may have lasted only a couple of plays.
How long it survives henceforth might come down to Miami’s personnel and how well the rest of the Dolphins’ offense develops.
